OpenWrt Router Downstream From Primary Router

Objective: Use OpenWrt router and separate network in addition to the primary router.
Background: I live in a shared housing situation, and my housemate has his own equipment (Arris SB6190 modem on Comcast ISP with single dynamic IP and Netgear R6700AX router using Netgear firmware). I would like to use the two Linksys EA8300 devices I purchased, both are using OpenWrt 19.07.7 with one configured as a gateway/router and the other as a WDS access point. The Netgear and OpenWrt routers are configured using different subnets.
Questions:
(1) is it okay to simply attach the OpenWrt router via the WAN port to the Netgear router LAN port? The OpenWrt IPv4 upstream data shows a Netgear DHCP assigned LAN address and both routers are sharing the same public IP address.
(2) is there alternate configuration that is better?
Thanks!

1 yes
2 not really
