OpenWrt on old Sony Vaio laptop

Hello,
I have an old Sony Vaio laptop (around 10-yr old model pcg-7181m, Intel Core 2 Duo) and want to setup Openwrt on it to use as my temporary travel router.
I downloaded openwrt-21.02.2-x86-64-generic-ext4-combined.img and wrote it to a USB flash drive.
(I assume I picked the correct image for the job).

When I boot with usb, there is no eth0 or wlan0 interfaces:

So I downloaded this package
https://archive.openwrt.org/releases/21.02.1/targets/x86/64/kmods/5.4.154-1-b70ee1516753f10c063dd361f74167d4/kmod-skge_5.4.154-1_x86_64.ipk
(hope I picked the correct one), put it into root home folder and ran opkg install. Still no eth0 interface.
Am I doing something wrong? Any help appreciated

You're almost there, see the hints in this topic:

Just be a little more specific with lspci -v for modules and lspci -n for device-id's and dmesg for firmware also use the image builder to make an image with all your drivers.

What does iw list say?

According to the OP the laptop is a ICH9 based Core 2 Duo which is 64bit, just curious what are the specific 32/64bit differences you are interested in?

You might conclude to early that its not there, dmesg says otherwise. Was the intelwifi working on a desktop linux distro on that same laptop, as in connecting to an A.P. or was the antenne turned off(soft)button?

I suggest to look at it from the terminal, since I guess you have OpenWrt shell access by default on a laptop (keyboard+lcd). Try some commands of the following link. In that same topic, there is also some info about working with shell access, start from begin it very similar to your situation. If you are missing commands refered there fillup the packages in your custom image and try again.

So ifconfig wlan0 up seems to work, wlan0 appears in ifconfig output afterwards.
But if I connect to the laptop with ethernet cable and access luci, I only see the eth0 interface, but not the wlan0 interface.. Any ideas?

Most of my idea's are in that previous link. I suggest you remake the image with wireless-tools pciutils usbutils wpad nano than try to scan for wireless networks from the terminal if that works remove the /etc/config/wireless and reboot and probably after that you have wlan0 in luci.

(I think it was already noted that you might only be able to setup a client, but hopefully you can add from there.)

On x86 the entire wireless stack is left out by default. If you don't have a Network->Wireless page at all, install iw, iwinfo, wpad-openssl besides the kernel driver for the card.

So I add

to the custom image, and I get "Error: Impossible package selection", why is that?

Multiple versions of wpad are listed, you can only have one. wpad-openssl is the best choice if you have lots of memory.

I'm not sure what wireless-tools does I've never installed it directly.
