OpenWRT on Netgear R6260

Thanks ercolino, this is exactly the piece of information I needed since the beginning. Clear and concise.

I suggest you guys edit the wiki to reflect that.
Do not forget that normal users are very afraid of bricking their device, so being very specific about what firmware files and when they must be used, is paramount.

What do you want the Wiki to reflect?

  • Can you provide the wording?
  • Are you asking this wording to be posted to every device page?

Again, it's not clear what you're asking to be reflected.

This is not accurate for all devices - nor all device initial installs.

it's also irrelevant for the installation process ...

speak now or forever hold your peace...

I'll give the OP 24 hours. Otherwise, I'll just edit:

Use the factory image. Apply factory OpenWrt image via OEM web-gui.

Seems redundant to me - but if the OP has a genuine concern, I want to be helpful and make the edit.

Maybe as an alternative:

For the OEM easy instillation, use the factory image.

I think you should have one more sentence containing the word factory, just to be on the safe side.

To reflect the fact that it is definitely not clear. It was not clear for me, it may not be for others too.

In other words, I understood that each of the 3 files has its own purpose and usage scenario. That has to be clarified.

The .img should be used when updating from the OEM web admin page, to my understanding.

To the other two I do not know, and I cannot be of much help.

so you're saying all not required files should be mentioned as "do not use", instead of only mentioning the one that should be ?

that's extremely logical, and helpful.

Yes, the Wiki says this already.

My apologies, I thought that was the topic of this conversation. I'll be honest, I don't see the lack of clarity.

Since you didn't agree to the wording - I assume it it didn't provide clarity. If you think of clear wording, feel free to post.

it's not clear

I don't think that's a good edit.

No I did not say that.
I said that each file must be attached to a specific scenario, so there is no misunderstanding or doubt.
E.g. .img file to be used from OEM web admin page and when upgrading from factory image (where applicable). I only understood that from ercolino eventually.
Totally unclear the usage scenario for the other two files though.

I was concerned you were saying that. You want someone to edit the Wiki of your device - to add information about files that should not be used for the easy OEM install.

Wouldn't that information be more relevant on the Image Formats page - or the generic TFTP pages, etc?

So you're still claiming that you don't understand?

Wow, ok. The Wiki was provided to you - are you saying the Image Formats Wiki is also unclear?

Perhaps someone else can assist - I wasn't aware you're saying the usage of the other 2 files remains unclear. I wish your OpenWrt setup and device well.

Thanks.

And thanks to Ercolino for clarifying eventually. It was easy.

I wish all the users good luck in understanding something from this wiki. Happy bricking.

OK - no worries. I'll just add this in 24 hours.

It seems likewise confusing to add information that new users don't need (i.e. about the 2 files) for the Easy Installation.

(for others) Maybe the generic TFTP link, debrick link. etc. should be added? Nevermind, I see that already exists.

99,9% of the users will just look for ercolino's answer.
So everybody pls go check it and off you go.
All the rest of the thread you may disregard.

But his answer is not accurate for 100% of devices and will brick about 10% of OpenWrt devices.

it doesn't provide any new info about the install process, what he posted is already in the wiki.

For most of them it definitely is.
Users: looking further may confuse you: do it at your own risk, as you can brick your device.

feel free to tell us what part that would be.

this applies to all openwrt capable devices, except for those with removable storage.
you're kicking in an open door.

@lucaluca was clear on what he asked/needed help with.
@frollic saw an opportunity and took it. Lol.
@lucaluca needs to lighten up.
No harm done.

For others Just FYI - the information posted by @lucaluca and @ercolino are valid specifically for the Netgear R6260.

Please read the Wiki for your specific device and the Image Format Wiki if there are questions on installation.

I am sure I fully clarified and glad you agreed. Nothing more to add.

Users will see the solution in first post, that's all I wanted, in their interest.

With all that said, I feel like I invested too much time already in this. Time to go.
The End.
