Does OpenWrt exist for TP-Link TD-W8961N and if it how do I know which version of the router I have?
- you read its model plate on the bottom of your device,
e.g.Model TD-W8961ND Ver x.y
.
I didn't find it there, Is there a way to know if support is coming to this device?
If it isn't explicitly listed as supported, then it simply isn't supported. There are no time frames when or if a device will be supported.

And just to elaborate a bit...
not all devices are suitable to be supported. It entirely depends on the chipset, the memory (RAM) and the storage, as well as a few other odds and ends. In addition, there are a very limited number of DSL modem+router devices that contain supportable DSL modems. A quick search didn't immediately reveal any of this information, but given the age and technical standards that (802.11n 300Mbps, 100Mbps, released over a decade ago), if it isn't supported now, it probably never will be.
