OpenWRT as wireless mesh access point with Unifi Router

I have recently bought a Unifi Dream Router (UDR), and I'm using that as my main router. I have several Google WiFi pucks, that I am able to flash OpenWRT on. I'm hoping to use these Google WiFi pucks as WiFi Access Points with a wireless backhaul, but I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out how to configure everything. I've seen a couple of tutorials, but everything I've seen assumes you're also using a OpenWRT main router.

I currently have OpenWRT installed on one device, and it is connected to my router via ethernet. I'm able to access it, and I have LUCI installed for configuration. I have followed some of the tutorials, but I'm not sure how to map them for an AP connected to an existing router.

Is it possible to use OpenWRT just for the Wireless mesh access points? If so, could someone help me with the needed config to connect to the UDR and repeat the network? Ideally I'd like to repeat multiple networks on different VLANs that I have configured on the UDR, but I only really need 1 right now.

Mesh almost certainly won’t work since you’re dealing with multiple ecosystems (the implementation is not likely to be compatible).

However, can you wire your other devices to the main router? If so, a dumb ap config (including VLANs) is very easy.

Unfortunately running cable isn't a realistic possibility. Vaulted ceilings + slab foundation mean there's no place to run them that doesn't involve cutting out half the sheet rock in the house.

As much as I love OpenWrt, I think you might find it easiest to stick with Unifi products for the mesh. They have a number of different AP options, including the newest "Unifi Express" device that may be perfect for your needs.

Alternatively, you could connect one of the devices via wire and then mesh from there... but that will be much more involved than just sticking with Unifi.
