OpenWRT and Australia's NBN

Q: Is the OpenWRT One modem/router compatible with Australia's NBN network?

Supplementary question: If the OpenWRT One is not compatible, which modem/routers are?

Yes, I've done LOTS of searching and have not found any. :worried:

The NBN provides the interface box and the inside port is Ethernet. OpenWrt One is compatible — ie the wan port is Ethernet.

There is no interface box - I already have an NBN connection and am looking for a new modem/router to replace my current one. I live in the Outback where inside temperatures frequently exceed my device’s 40°C max.

no idea about temps, but hw available in AU was discussed just the other day in Router without wifi or can completely disable wifi?.

You will have to take the risk. Internal components are rated in 70-100 range, one thermal throttle will not burn it to ashes. Heat dissipation is proportional to temperature difference. Just make sure there is air flow and not from the sunny side, and from the sunny side of things - choose ones in white cases, incl power supply, maybe even consider PoE for less wires.

If you have no NBN NTD, is your NBN connection via FTTN? (or FTTB for apartment/unit blocks which would seem unlikely outside cities). If so your options for an OpenWrt compatible device are restricted to what’s available on the second hand market of which the best would be the AVM Fritz!box 7530 (which is what I’m using). There are other VDSL2 modems that can be put into bridge mode which then allows using an OpenWrt router behind them.

Let’s start by defining your access technology. “NBN” is a multi-technology mix (thanks politicians!).

If you’re rural, are you on fixed wireless or skymuster? Or did you somehow score FTTN?

sigh Not one person has answered my initial question. :frowning:

I’ve given up on OpenWRT.

Thats overbroad, you get CPE which may be Satellite, 4G, VDSL or PON. They do not permit BYOD, so you are stuck with their CPE that in its simplest incarnation provides at least one OpenWrt compatible ethernet port.

Yes.

Because you provided vastly insufficient information. Even so, people tried to answer.

Look at my initial question. You failed to answer it.

because you failed to tell us how your uplink works.

answers will be provided based on the information you share, in this case, as pointed out by @lantis1008, none.

but if your upstream device have an Ethernet port, then yes, it probably will.

Any modern router would be compatible with NBN FTTP as it's just ethernet from the NBN box to the router, then you set up your SSID and key like any other stock firmware.

If you aren't keen on starting with OpenWRT, just get a good off-the-shelf router and flash OpenWRT later on. Just compare models with the supported hardware list to ensure you can easily flash OpenWRT.

That way you can at least go back to factory firmware if OpenWRT doesn't work for whatever reason.

I don't expect you'd have issues though as even FTTN is just an rj12 connection and your ISP will guide you with how to configure that. Just make sure you get a MODEM router if it is FTTN, not just a router.

Just start with a normal router so you have internet and get familiar with playing around with the stock interface, and then flash OpenWRT later.

It's generally fine (ie. just setup the WAN interface for dhcp, which is default?) except for the following cases:

  1. If you require a VDSL modem, which is the case with technology types: FTTN + FTTB. You will require additional hardware such as a modem to put into bridge mode, or one of those SFP VDSL2 sticks if you want to go that route (And you have SFP ports). Generally I recommend just grabbing a 2nd hand Telstra modem for less than 50 AUD and putting in bridge mode.
  2. If you are with a TPG Group service provider, this will require additional configuration for vlan id 2. Additionally, avoid their VoIP home phone service, as this is locked to their bundled hardware and they refuse to provide credentials.
