Not working TP-Link AC600 (Ralink MT7610U) on TP-Link TL-WR1043ND v1

I need to use this adapter as a client to a 5.8 GHz wlan.

I've installed kmod-mt76x0u, the adapter is detected, I can scan for neighbors and select one to join, but the router resets as soon as I save and apply configuration to connect. This happens with both 2.4 and 5.8 networks. I cannot regain control of ther router because it keeps reseting over and over until I pull out the adapter from the USB port.

If I bring up the adapter (not configured to connect to any network) with

ifconfig wlan1 up

nothing weird happens... I have some ideas about what could be going on here.

  1. The adapter is using too much power when asked to connect and this resets the router
  2. Buggy MT76X0U drivers
  3. Some kind of misconfiguration

About 1) I have already tried an RTL8187 adapter and it works ok, but it could be the case that MT7610U drafts more power.

Has anybody managed to get a Mediatek MT7610U associated? I have the exact same problem as this post, but have not found much more information in this forum.

I would go with option 1 as cause, hence nothing to solve on the openwrt side.
Also, the initial post is 3.5 yrs old.
