Need help setting up my router

I have a TP-Link Archer AX53 and have been using it for over a year, instead of that Huawei abomination my ISP gave me, which isn't even supporting 1000Mb/s although my service is 1Gb.

The software in the TP-Link Archer AX53 router is trash, the router resets by itself sometimes when i reboot or when power goes out, the web admin page is slow. So i thought maybe i should install OpenWrt and try. I am a Debian Linux user.

Only problem is that Archer AX53 is not supported, so i had to buy an Archer AX23 which is supported.

I downloaded the "Factory image" and flashed it, and it worked fine, i can access the openwrt admin page, then i saw the "Sysupgrade image" and i thought maybe it's an up to date image or something, so i downloaded and flashed it, no problems.

I thought it would be easy setting up for my internet to work but the settings in openwrt are a lot and complex, wtf.

The settings for my internet to work are:

  1. Internet Connection Type: PPoE
  2. PPoE Username: provided by my ISP and i have it
  3. PPoE Password: i have it as well
  4. VLAN ID: i discovered this by trying to copy the settings from my ISP router to my AX53, this is important and my internet doesn't seem to work without it. I have that number

I have all the info but don't know where to put what in my AX23 openwrt setup.

I also need to change the mac address of my openwrt AX23 so that the ISP sees that i am still using their low quality Huawei router, i have the mac address. It's called "MAC Clone" in the tp-link software.

I would appreciate any help setting these up, i haven't changed any setting in the fresh openwrt install other than the root password for the admin page and turning on the wifi to work to be able to connect to the router without using an ethernet cable.

Thanks for taking your time to read this.

Are you fine with using ssh and a shell only?

Take https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/network/wan/isp-configurations as a reference and inspiration.

Old MIPS CPU will not provide even half of 1Gbit in software mode. Too slow.

You should probably stay with stock firmware if you're baffled by UI.

If you're brave enough:

  1. https://openwrt.org/docs/guide-user/network/start
  2. Try typing "openwrt pppoe vlan setup" in Google or "pppoe vlan" here in search.
