Need advice on the hardware choice, NanoPi R3S vs R2S support

May I ask for some advice on the hardware choice. I need small home router to learn and use OpenWRT in my home network. I was thinking about NanoPi R3S or maybe NanoPi R5C, but I'm reluctant because I'd prefer something with mainstream OpenWRT support. R3S and R5C only have their own FriendlyWrt fork. So I am undecided and even think of downgrading to NanoPi R2S as it's listed under firmware-selector.openwrt.org and has mainline OpenWRT support.

I have red through this NanoPi R3S discussion, and it seems that mainline support isn't too far away but then NanoPi R5C is 2 years old now and it quite seemed popular, yet it's still stuck on FriendlyWrt. And FriendlyWrt builds for R3S/R5C seem updated but still...

Performance wise even NanoPi R2S would probably suffice. But I want to do traffic shaping and other stuff, maybe even host a container or two, and R3S would be better and more future proof.

Does R3S seem to be getting mainline OpenWRT support at some point in time? Does this bellow mean that R3S is getting support in next openwrt release:

Any advice or opinion? My budget is kinda restricted, so R3S/R2S seem like the best options and I'd prefer R3S if it looks to be supported sometime. What would you choose?

R3s is supported in latest stable branch (release candidate state for now)

R2S results on 24.10.0-rc4: 47.26d/9.85u Mbps, Ping ms 13i/12d/12u 49152/10800 on WAN

I would choose the R3S. It is supported by OpenWrt in the pending 24.10 stable version (currently at release candidate 4) and also in OpenWrt snapshot.

Ordered the R3S this morning. Couldn't resist the price, only little more expensive than R2S and that's with aluminium box/heatsink and 2GB RAM and 32GB EMMC. Cheers.
