wan and wan6 are uci configuration sections. Both of them use the same underlying kernel network interface (by default eth1 or eth0.2). I haven't tested your scenario, but theoretically they should be the same and you can use either one. Did using wan6 not work?
I wasted a lot of time with this relay configuration. It does relay and LAN hosts does get Global Unicast Addresses, but there is no IPv6 connection to the Internet. This bug has been reported but no fix so far.
Ok i have to test it again it maybe cause because that i didnt reboot modem when i used wan6.
I got an IPv6 connection to the internet, I tested it with https://test-ipv6.com/ that connection worked for a while but the next day something happened (I don't know what) and then it didn't work anymore. I gave up on getting that to work also because my DDNS service provider doesn't support IPv6.

I tested again and yes you are right, wan6 works when I restart the modem.
I'll leave that IPv6 with relay settings on for now as long as it works.
