Great to hear it is solved.
Without a DNS server set in the config the client just uses its own existing DNS server.
I do not know what that is , I think you use MacOs, I have never used that so do not know how to view network settings but if you use a DNS server which is not public then that might not work through the VPN and hence you need to add a DNS server which can work through the VPN 
About routing from an OpenVPN server to a client, usually adding a simple route is not enough.
