How to allow VPN provider DNS through AdGuardHome?

I'm using AdGuardHome for DNS requests. However, when openvpn is running I'm forced to use AdGuardHome DNS instead of my VPN provider's DNS.
How can I exempt openvpn from using AdGuardHome DNS?

Did you try to add a static route for the AdGuardHome nameserver addresses to be routed via the ISP link?

Can you please walk me through the basic steps? I easily get lost in linux.

Add the ISP interface and the IP of the nameserver as target.
