Host Managed SMR sata hard drive anyone?

Hey fellas

Has anyone attempted to use something like a Western Digital HC620 Data Center sata drive on OpenWRT?

I'm told these drives don't really work in normal desktop computers. Under Linux there is a way to use them by formatting them with f2fs.

I'm just relaying information. I have no idea if it's true or not. Any ideas? Thanks!

There's a good deal on DC drives with perfect S.M.A.R.T values. Just curious.

Thanks!

Another issue that came to mind is obviously if sata-usb chipsets can have problems with HM-SMR drives? My router only has a usb3.0 port.

A data center drive may actually be SAS (serial attsched scisi). These will not work with a normal data controller.

Host managed SMR (zbc/ zac drives) 'should' be supported since kernel v4.17, for the details (and filesystem support beyond f2fs) you may have to check general purpose distributions vs OpenWrt and maybe add some bits and pieces. SATA vs SAS certainly applies as well.

slh hit the nail on the head.

I just figured out it's a Host Managed SMR drive and updated the title.

What about usb-sata controllers? Has anyone tried an HM-SMR drive on common usb-sata contollers?

Native AHCI controllers are probably more compatible and forgiving, than USB-to-SATA bridges.

With risk of soumding too demanding...

I'd love to hear a success story of a HA-SMR drive connected to an OpenWRT router over usb.

Anyone?
