Hard reset a locked Linksys E8450 with reset button disabled

when i was setting up this router about 2 years ago i disabled luci and setup a yubiky with pin and SSH into the router

also i think i disabled the reset button

now 2 years later i think i remember the custom port i used for SSH but i ran out of tries on my yubikey pin LOL haha nice and secure

now that there is an update id like to just factory reset this router and install the new OpenWrt is there a good way todo that? i noticed the section about Serial Recovery could i reset it that way or am i screwed lol ? thanks

There is a reason why this is not a recommended method to secure your router.

I think you should be able to recover using serial and tftp. This will result in completely overwriting the firmware that's on there, and you will also lose your configuration.

Keep in mind that there are also some other important aspects to this device -- namely the partition layout and the UBI/non-UBI firmware images... make sure you use the right image and/or that you make the necessary changes to use UBI if desired. I don't have experience with this device, so I can't provide specifics beyond that, but I do think that the hardware is recoverable using serial as described.

Serial recovery will certainly take care of it. All you should need to do is boot up the device with the serial console attached and select 'factory reset' from the boot menu before it gets a chance to load into OpenWRT. That procedure will revert the router to the default behaviors and settings within the firmware image.

... or let it boot and run firstboot -y && reboot from serial console.
