Hello I just received and setup my GL-MT6000 (recommended by users here) replacing my aging R7800, it literally took 5mins to setup including my VPN's. The reason for the upgrade was my R7800 struggled to reach 1GB download from my new plan. Now I get lightning speeds wired and lightning speed on wireless if I'm close to the vicinity of my router. I have been using a TP-Link M5 Deco mesh system around my house as it is large. With the mesh system I'm getting around 200mbs, I have 4 of these mesh units scattered around my house. Is there anything I can do to increase this wireless speed? I have switched off wireless on the GL-MT6000 as I've read its not good practice to have both switched on together. In addition to the mesh units, I have 2 X R7000 routers and also 1 X R7800. Can I use these for anything other than door stops?
Thanks Frollic, yes the primary node is connected to the GL-MT6000. I wish I could use the wifi from the GL-MT6000 but when I walk to the front room of my house I have no wifi at all.
Come-on theres gotta be something you guys are magicians
1: You probably have too many units. Take one out and strategically place them instead. Unless you have a mansion, 4 is too much.
2: You need tri band
A better idea imo if you really need mesh. Send the GL-MT6000 back and get some second hand MX4200 units from Ebay. If you play your cards right you can get 3 MX4200 units for the price of one GL-MT6000. Flash all to OpenWRT and configure mesh on one of the 5Ghz radios. Done.
Hi Bartvz no I've left everything as stock. If I install proper OpenWRT I will lose the GL-MT6000 GUI? so I understand how will that improve my wifi speed?
I like this idea but there is so many different modes.....I was thinking of AP mode but you need to hardwire them to your main router. I can only do one hardwired my current mesh nodes are wirelessly connected except for the primary which is sitting beside and plugged into my main router. My house is around 35m long and solid brick. I have one node at the front of the house another node next to my primary router 20m from the front, one node at the back of the house and another in my unattached garage which is colour bond. The node at the back of the house helps the hop node in the garage which acts like a shield and without it I have zero wireless. Unfortunately there is no cabling in the garage.
It means that you’re posting on the wrong forum, as OpenWrt can’t comment on any modifications that the manufacturers spin off firmware has done that may change the experience. Here’s the wall of text:
It appears you are using firmware that is not from the official OpenWrt project.
When using forks/offshoots/vendor-specific builds that are "based on OpenWrt", there may be many differences compared to the official versions (hosted by OpenWrt.org). Some of these customizations may fundamentally change the way that OpenWrt works. You might need help from people with specific/specialized knowledge about the firmware you are using, so it is possible that advice you get here may not be useful.
Ask for help from the maintainer(s) or user community of the specific firmware that you are using.
Provide the source code for the firmware so that users on this forum can understand how your firmware works (OpenWrt forum users are volunteers, so somebody might look at the code if they have time and are interested in your issue).
If you believe that this specific issue is common to generic/official OpenWrt and/or the maintainers of your build have indicated as such, please feel free to clarify.
Thanks Lantis for such a detailed response. Ive posted in the hardware section.for suggestions. My setup is working as it should i only posted to see if i can improve my wireless that is at a distance from my main router. I dont beleive its an openwrt issue hence the post in the hardware section. You do have valid points and i thankyou for them.
