Filogic 860 and WiFi 7 devices

MediaTek has unveiled two new WiFi 7 chipsets with the Filogic 860 tri-core Arm Cortex-A73 SoC designed for up to BE7200 mainstream routers and gateways…

With new Mediatek Filogic 860 SoC on the way, we are closer to getting new WiFi 7 devices in the near future.

What do you think, how far away are we actually from porting OpenWRT for this SoC?

Can you purchase devices with it?
Yes, I thought so too.

Let's defer this question until you actually can, and after anyone has had them on their desk.

As far as I’m aware, such SoC’s are usually available before any manufacturer actually goes live with a device.

But to tell the truth, I’m not familar how and under what conditions.

Obviously they are, inhouse at the chipset vendor and large scale manufacturers.

But in general, OpenWrt developers will have to go out to buy a production level design from the shelves, putting their own money on the counter to start with the development.

Exceptions may exist occasionally, if the involved parties have a good personal relation (so not at the project level), with earlier access to devices, but that's typically still late in the process - not while not even a single actual device has been announced or confirmed. But this is an exception, not the rule.
