Dynalink DL-WRX36 and Ath11k issues

I have been doing some reading prior to getting a DL-WRX36 and see that there has been some issues with the WIFI disconnecting due to Ath11k (whatever that means lol). I am interested on running the DL-WRX36 for as long as possible without having to fix small bugs such as this one as I am going to have a busy period of my life coming soon.

I was just wondering, has this issue been fixed? I saw some posts dating back to the middle of last year and some dating back to early 2024. Based on the reading, it appears that it is not only a DL-WRX36 issue, right?

Are there any other issues with the DL-WRX36 that I should worry about prior to pulling the trigger?

There is no wifi without any issues at all, that includes even the OEM firmware(s). The bigger is question is if it affects you, with your zoo of devices, or not - but that's something you can only observe in practice, in your daily life. Usually these issues are not total failures, 'just' weird interactions with some devices (interoperability), in rarer cases some condition that may trigger the driver/ firmware into a crash (the driver should recover from that though).

The DL-WRX36 should be fine, in general - if it is specifically for you, remains to be seen.

It's really hard to give an all-clear for any wireless device, wireless is fragile by its very nature - and if you depend on it, prefer a copper wire for the most critical devices. That said, most users won't ever notice problems - and if they do, they generally find some workarounds (which isn't great, but that's life).

This probably sounds worse than it really is - and shouldn't prevent you from giving it a try.

Okay that seems like reasonable lol. So I shouldn't worry about this right?

I am asking because my wifi is sick of issues with a our current router which is why I am upgrading, so if I get a new one and another issue pops up, I won't hear the end of it....otherwise I wouldn't mind playing around to bugs and finding fixes since I enjoy doing things like that.

You might still be worried about that, but the situation with ath11k in DL-WRX36 has improved in the last few months. I think that there has been some fixes in the upstream closed-source firmware blob and in our own hostapd.
I haven't seen a ath11k crash for some weeks now.

That really meant that sometimes when a device disconnected from the router, the router's wifi crashed requiring a full reboot.

I had the wifi stack crashing issues with this router. Sometimes I'd go days without a crash other times I'd get multiple in one day. I had to switch back to my old router for a while because I didn't have time to work out the issue.

I decided to start over and add things incrementally to see if I could get it running stable. About 2 weeks ago I brought the DL-WRX36 back to the stock firmware and then reinstalled OpenWRT to the latest snapshot. Haven't had any issues since.

I did notice a post from someone who'd isolated their issues to a Tuya iot device, which I also have, but it doesn't appear to be causing issues on the new firmware blob.

I'm on Snapshot r25900, the latest snapshot is r25996.

Yes, it does. (the ath11k firmware update was done in mid-March)

And there has also been mac80211 fixes in Feb-March fixing some possible disconnection related crashes:

I've not had an ath11k crash on any of my three WRX36 devices for... months now, I think*. I'm also seeing far fewer of the "failed to flush transmit queue" errors since I renamed my 5GHz networks to not be the same as their corresponding 2.4GHz SSIDs. Mine are all currently on SNAPSHOT r25900.

*I did remove the dodgy Tuya LED controllers that induced the crashes with extreme prejudice, mind you.

TY for the update. Regarding the Tuya LED controllers, did you remove them from the packages? Sorry if it is a stupid question, I am new to OpenWRT and don't want to mess up.

No! They were physical devices connected to LED strips in my kitchen, which caused the ath11k drivers to crash. It was completely repeatable. My wife stuck some tape on the light switch with the word "NOPE" written on it, and a few days later I took them out and broke them so they couldn't be re-used.

At least your wife seems understanding about electronic issues. Mine just wants it to work and doesn't want to hear how I am "working on it" hahaha

After a long quiet period, I got a new ath11k wifi crash today.
Slightly different than the earlier ones, as there is no permanent loop in the system log.
Possible the fixes or the firmware blob changes have had some impact.
(might interest also @robimarko or @Ansuel )

I haven't seen that error since I ensured that the SSIDs on phy0 and phy1 had different names.

I have one too and I am happy with it never seen a wifi crash but my router is lightly taxed with two modern Samsung phones and a Samsung tablet.
Most new routers have quirks that is why they have frequent updates :slight_smile:
