Downloads failed all the time (timeout)

Dear all,

I have successfully installed Openwrt on a TD-W8970 modem router.

Everything seems to work fine. But after a while I realized that all my downloads failes after a little while. This is tested in three computers that I have in my house.

Is there anything that I can do in Operwrt in order to find out if there is a problem with the settings there?

I have tested the ISPs modem and it works fine.

Than you in advance
Apostolos

  • Do you have a Static WAN configuration?
  • If so, have you specified a DNS server on the WAN port?

Thank you for replying.

The modem is connected straitght to the ISP (telephone line, ADSL2+).

  • By saying "I have tested the ISPs modem and it works fine" i meant that I connected the modem that the ISP has given to me, with the telephone line and the modem connects without disconnecting during download. Thats why I am wondering if it is something that has to do with Openwrt settings.

  • I have filled up the fields for DNS server both in Lan Interface configuration and in DHCP settings. The two IPs for DNS Server was taken from my ISP's configuration guide.

The problem still exists. Downloads are never completed. They are always stopped after a while.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

  • What about on WAN???
  • Describe the download issue in more detail.
  • What make/model device do you have?

Ok... about the wan settings please see below:

Concering the setting in the Network -> Interfaces tab see thee image bleow:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Sk_KaAAwwy3-HgmBenf9MaAkrFUDcHXf

Except from these settings I cannot see anything else.

The DNS servers' IPs are set as shown below:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Wc1l7UlKgCG6pHiNFllwlh93d0q9Kiut

Sorry for the google drive links. I cannot upload more than one image.

I have tested this procedure in two computers one laptop and one desktop. Both connected through Qualcomm Atheros AR8131 gigabit ethernet cards. Both are running Ubuntu 18.04.

For example I try to download the JAVA jre. Chromium is the browser.
The download starts properly but after a while (this duration till the download fails varies from time to time) and the suddenly the download speed falls second by second till 0. After a while the download times out.

Thank you

Can you provide the answer to this?

Its a TPLINK TD-W8970 v1.2
https://www.tp-link.com/gr/download/TD-W8970_V1.html

https://openwrt.org/toh/tp-link/td-w8970_v1

8/64 device, 500 MHz Lantiq SoC, Atheros AR9381 wireless.

What do you see as idle CPU when running top just as things freeze up?

What about free?

Edit: The htop package provides an very usable visual output in a terminal of both of these and more.

I'm assuming you aren't running bandwidth shaping, VPN, proxies, file sharing, or the like, or are you?

(You can post terminal output into your posts using the </> button in the toolbar. Seeing /etc/config/network, /etc/config/wireless, ... , with sensitive data removed, is a lot easier for many here to check than screenshots.)

seems consistent with the issue @bill888 linked

Thank you all guys for the effort and the support.
It seems that the problem solved...

the 2nd link from @bill888 (https://bugs.openwrt.org/index.php?do=details&task_id=1259) gave the solution.

Only one value was enough. See image below:

LCP echo failure threshold changed from 0 to 5.

Once again thank you
