Hi.

I've been using a usb3 network adapter on my raspberry pi 4b router.

Up until today, every time I tried to do a video call on whatsapp, the wan device (which has the chip asix ax88179a) went down. (It seems this is a known bug about it, that takes the device down under heavy loads). Well, apparently there is a good/safe workaround for this situation.

If you take a look at these posts:

First post with a "manual" temporary solution (that has to be issued on every reboot)

Second post with an "automatic" sticky solution (that survives reboot)

There's one prerequisite, though, which is, the package kmod-usb-net-cdc-mbim be installed first. So, I guess installing kmod-usb-net-asix-ax88179 would call upon (almost definitely) for the following measures:

  1. the aforementioned package dependency kmod-usb-net-cdc-mbim;

  2. and the creation/modification of a file under the router's /etc/modprobe.d/ directory (that may have whichever name you would like but with the .conf extension and the following contents:

softdep ax88179_178a pre: cdc_mbim

Note: I haven't yet thoroughly tested this solution, but I invite anyone here who might be facing these sort of issues with this asix chipped device to try out this solution. And to post their findings as well. So, this is a shout-out to all who might be facing these issues with these asix chips.

I am willing to try out and build the according package and its dependencies. But, mind you, I haven't yet compiled any openwrt packages, so, if I have to do this task, I would politely ask you, the community, to be patient with me, since I am a mere hobbyist.

This does not look right. There should be no direct relation between those drivers.

If that fixes anything then it's a side effect. We should figure out what it is. Could you provide dumps of (the relevant parts of)

dmesg

for both the failing and working cases?

I am hoping there's something obvious in there somewhere.

I doubt an ethernet dongle can use MBIM since no L2 headers are sent between host and device. But cdc_mbim will load cdc-wdm and cdc_ncm too. And those could maybe make some difference.

Other than that, the only idea I have is that it could some firmware timing issue where and additional driver causes just enough delay. That's going to be harder to fix... But we can try

Noteworthy:

The issues did not disappear after the settings implemented. What indeed happened (against what was happening before) was that it took longer for the setup, with the workaround in place, to fail again. Before that everytime I did make a video call with whatsapp, the usb ethernet device taking care of the wan interface crashed. After that workaround it did take a while longer, but eventually it happened as well.

So @bmork , I guess you are right, but nonetheless I've decided to post the information that you've requested. Maybe there is some correlation between those devices and their settings. And of course unintentionally the configurations I've put in place could affect one another.

During this session I haven't (yet) made any whatsapp video calls.

This is odd. The :2 shows us that this device is currently using configuration #2. But there is no such config here according to the usb/devices you have.

And it goes on. Here's a second interface. Also mathcing this driver, so it muts be vendor specific.

That's more like it. Cfg #1 and only one interface numbered #0. This is what we'd expect from the beginning.

But now I'm starting to wonder what kind of device you have. Could this be a fake chip? What the heck is that second bulk out endpoint for? It should not be there.

I guess there are two possibilities: You are reading pretty random USB descriptors with lots of errers from this device. Or this has a seriously messed up firmware presenting all sorts of errors.
