D-Link DAP-X1860 installation

Hi, newbee here
I have bought DAP-X1860 as an excellent choice for dumb AP role but I am struggling with installation process for multiple days. I try to search and read everything that can be found here and there but no luck.

Installation itself is straightforward. Recovery mode, chromium browser, go to 192.168.0.50, upload factory image (my first confusion: Why 'factory' and not 'recovery' in the name of image?), reboot Openwrt is running and everything is great...

...unitl first reboot. Then device is in some kind of boot loop. Red LED is on for 15s and off for 1s and I can see that network connection is cycling on my adapter but I can't connect in with my browser.

I have tried multiple browsers on Mac and Linux (Chrome, Edge, Chromium, ...) and result was the same every time.

I’ve also tried to use older factory image and then immediately run sysupgrade from Luci. Again the boot loop.

I have decrypted the original FW and it CAN be installed this way and work flawlessly even after reboot.

Please, what I am doing wrong? :expressionless:

I also would expect to ist the recovery image in the recovery web interface.
The factory should only be used when flashing via OEM web interface.
Did you try to use the recovery image in the recovery web interface?
And which version did you use? I can try to reproduce it with my device

Ok, just saw that there is only a factory image in the firmware selector…

I just tried to follow manual on the device page:

There is mentioned factory image for flashing from recovery mode
And the recovery image is not even present on device download page.

I have also tried to use factory image via D-Link web UI and encrypt factory image and then use in web UI. Nothing works

Sorry for the confusion regarding the images, I also tried the factory image in the recovery web interface (Version 23.05.2 (r23630-842932a63d)):

grafik

Reboot afterwards works here as well. Sysupgrade too.
Questions:

  • Which version do you use?
  • Do you apply specific settings before reboot or sysupgrade?

Looks correct. I have the same MD5 hash on my screen.

...and again. Luci works until first reboot. Then boot loop with slow red flashing

Version obviously the same as you used.
No special setting at all. Just setting root password and then reboot.

Ok, strange. Also tried to change settings and reboot, no problems so far. Can you post the system log after first boot?
@s_2 : Any idea what can go wrong here?

When this device was added, the factory image encryption was fully reverse engineered already, but we did not have the RSA private key to sign the images, so there is no encrypted image, thus the (only) image was named factory.
Later D-Link published the GPL code which leaked the RSA key that allows making "real" factory images (flashable via OEM web interface), but currently this is documented only in the wiki... (would probably just make it more confusing to replace factory with something that can no longer be flashed via recovery)

In general, the bad block management seems to be a bit weird with this device - even with OEM firmware, though OpenWrt usually works better (since it will use an additional layer of UBI on top of the quirky Mediatek bad block management, which was replaced with bmt,v2 with later devices, but this one still uses nmbm).
So, the kernel partition is not protected against corruption in the same way as the rest, though this is usually updated very rarely and should not cause issues, especially when overwriting.
I've seen (very) few devices being confused when attaching ubi if there were remainders of a previous file system in the flash, not sure if this is relevant here.

Since all else failed, you could still try the following:

  • flash initramfs image via recovery
  • ssh into it, run
    mtd erase kernel
    mtd erase fwconcat0
    mtd erase fwconcat1
  • reboot into recovery again, flash OpenWrt factory again

Sorry for stupid question but where is the initramfs file for this device?

it's the first of the 3 images from the list in the downloads section, i.e.
https://downloads.openwrt.org/releases/23.05.2/targets/ramips/mt7621/openwrt-23.05.2-ramips-mt7621-dlink_dap-x1860-a1-initramfs-kernel.bin
this is similar to booting from a USB drive, the image contains a live filesystem that will be in RAM, so you can erase the NAND underneath while the system is still running.

I flashed the kernel image

But the device booted back to the recovery mode and recovery page on 192.168.0.50 is active again.
Not possible to connect 192.168.1.1 with SSH
When I power cycle the device longer red light is followed by short red recovery flashing and recovery mode is established without holding reset button.

I can SSH to the Factory image (before the first reboot) if it helps...

Compared to my system log, I see some differences:
I don't know where this comes from

Tue Nov 14 13:38:18 2023 kern.info kernel: [ 1.072092] pci 0000:00:00.0: bridge configuration invalid ([bus 00-00]), reconfiguring
Tue Nov 14 13:38:18 2023 kern.info kernel: [ 1.080075] pci 0000:00:01.0: bridge configuration invalid ([bus 00-00]), reconfiguring

This looks strange for me (but I'm not an expert in this topic):

Tue Nov 14 13:38:18 2023 kern.notice kernel: [ 4.235998] UBI: EOF marker found, PEBs from 34 will be erased
Tue Nov 14 13:38:18 2023 kern.notice kernel: [ 5.250728] ubi0: volume 1 ("rootfs_data") re-sized from 9 to 748 LEBs

I tried to open the case to access serial connection but it's very hard to open it without case destruction...

I'm sorry, I had not checked the format... :see_no_evil: The initramfs offered for download is actually for booting via tftp only, but when flashing via recovery, the elx header needs to be added. Sorry, it's been too long ago with this device :innocent:
I found an old image on my server from January 2023, but it still should be fine:
http://sebastianschaper.net/openwrt/openwrt-ramips-mt7621-dlink_dap-x1860-a1-initramfs-kernel-nandflash.bin
This is an initramfs packed to recovery-flashable format, from that you should be able to erase the mtd partitions for kernel and ubi (fwconcat0 and fwconcat1, hopefully mtd will allow you to erase those, otherwise try mtd erase ubi, one of them should work).

This looks like the expected behavior on first flash, when the ubi is expanded to the full size of the flash. But maybe there's still some remainder of previous data there, although that would yield different errors

I would like to ask something about this topic. I am too stupid to get into recovery mode. What am I doing wrong? I hold the reset button when I plug in the device. The LED then flashes, but red. In the browser, I can't access a page via the IP, nothing is displayed.

EDIT: I got it, I am just stupid. I forgot to bring my laptop to, for example, IP 192.168.0.10. It works now, OpenWRT is online now

I want to confirm that I had exactly the same issue. I followed the instructions as they are described in the wiki:

  1. Rebooted in recovery mode
  2. Uploaded the latest *-factory.bin file from the Firmware Selector
  3. Flash was apparently successful, as the router rebooted in OpenWRT

However, if I did nothing but just rebooted again, the AP would be stuck with an orange light that eventually blinked once every 10s or so. I was going crazy over this, I repeated this process a dozen times, I thought I hard a hardware issue.

And then I found this thread. Thank you so much for this.

At first I tried erasing the flash to get rid of any remnant that was there:

mtd erase kernel
mtd erase fwconcat0
mtd erase fwconcat1

Which worked (as in: no errors), and I repeated steps 1-3. However, this didn't fix the problem. Or, better said, this was not actually the problem.

What actually fixed the problem was downloading the image from above (*-nandflash.bin) and flashing it. So the actual problem is that the *-factory.bin images are not actually working for flashing for the first time, and for some reason they only work on first boot but do not boot afterwards.

I even tried flashing a new one via sysupgrade immediately after booting for the first time, but it looks like the flash continues to be in a "bad" state after the initial flash with the factory image because the router will stick be soft bricked with the orange light any time it boots.

So a word of warning to the next person who gets here with the same problem: the instructions in the wiki are not accurate; the factory images are not suitable for a first flash, the actual image that should be used is the one that was mentioned in this thread.
