Cudy WR1300 v3 MT7613BE

@Djfe Hi, are there any updates? I can make a new PR just changing the offsets, but your patch combining into one .dtsi is still better.

@Djfe Hi, are there any updates? I can make a new PR myself if you are too busy.

Hello, are there any works on OpenWrt for WR1300E?

Not really AFAIK. It should be easy to support but there are two issues:

  • someone has to have the device physically in order to test
  • for installation to not require a flash programmer, Cudy needs to make their own signed build.

Has anyone contacted Cudy support? Apparently, their software is based on OpenWrt.

it's like saying it runs on electricity, "all" routers, even the unsupported/able ones use openwrt (or LEDE), to some extent.

Hi,

I recently bought a WRT1300 v3 (EU3.0), and immediately switched from stock-firmware to OpenWRT.

Unfortunately, with https://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/targets/ramips/mt7621/openwrt-ramips-mt7621-cudy_wr1300-v3-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin (SNAPSHOT r24944-906595c262 downloaded on 31.01.2024) I experienced way lower 5Ghz WIFI-signal compared to the stock firmware (resp Cudy's OpenWRT-Version) - searching for a possible reason led me to this post.

Is the issue described here still open, or should it be fixed already? It seems that at least some things changed in the meantime, e.g. that there is now a dedicated binary-image for the v3.

Any hints are appreciated, also in how to debug the issue further. Currently I can only say for sure, that with OpenWRT snapshot:

  • I have no 5GHz-coverage on several places in my house, where stock-firmware had -83 dBm ("measured" with a mobile phone)
  • LuCI's setting "Maximum Transit Power" has no effect (always shows "Current power 23 dBm" regardless of what was configured)

Can you do: hexdump /dev/mtd2ro and paste it here?

Can you also do dmesg | grep 0000: and paste it here?

Also, what country did you select in the regulatory domain setting? 23dBm is normal for DFS-ETSI (Europe) regulatory domains.

If you are in another country, try changing the regulatory domain country (Advanced Settings -> Country Code).

What is the tx power when using stock firmware?

thx for the fast response. The output is:

Shall I post same output with cudy's openWRT-Verison
http://www.cudytech.com/filedownload/711707 ?

Regarding the issue of not being able to limit the TX-Power: Sorry, I can no longer reproduce it ... ( I had "AT" and "driver default" and don't know when the issue exactly occurred) - I will try to reproduce and provide a detailed description if I succeed.

The issue described here should be fixed - it works on two WR1300v3 devices I tested on and others confirmed that it is fixed too.

The output you pasted here shows that you indeed have a v3 device. The problem with Cudy's version is that they have the same build for v2 and v3 and that shouldn't work.

v3 has:

  • MT7603BE (b/g/n 2.4 GHz chip) connected to PCI 0000:01:00.0
  • MT7613BE (a/n/ac 5 GHz chip) connected to PCI 0000:02:00.0

while v2 has:

  • MT7603BE (b/g/n 2.4 GHz chip) connected to PCI 0000:02:00.0
  • MT7613BE (a/n/ac 5 GHz chip) connected to PCI 0000:01:00.0

Can you post the following with Cudy's build (after setting up wifi aps on both 2.4 and 5GHz):

  • dmesg | grep 0000:
  • iw list

Hi,

here is the output of the commands you listed.

However, I ran them on another router than in my previous post, which was already on Cudy's OpenWRT-version (so it was easier for me to upgrade, than doing a downgrade with TFTP first), that's why I included also the commands from last post again for this device (just to be sure).

Here with Cudy's OpenWRT:

The most obvious difference I found in iw list: "Band 1" vanished from "phy1" after the upgrade.

And here the hexdump again (as separate post, due to length-limitation):

Since I can't really see any difference in the outputs, can you try my 23.05.2 build (based on the still open pull request . The build only touches the .dts to make it compatible with v3, otherwise it is completely compatible with 23.05.2 - including installing official kernel modules.

This is the output with your build:

With this build, "Band 1" on "phy1" is back.
And also, in LuCI the device is shown as "MediaTek MT7613BE 802.11ac/b/g/n" (instead of "MediaTek MT7613BE 802.11ac/n" with the SNAPSHOT-Build).

That's fine - I didn't limit the frequency range in this build in the dts.

My question is does this version work for you?

Sorry for the late answer - I did a lot of tests and tried many versions, after doing a factory-reset and recovery to stock-firmware.

(I am trying to accomplish a wireless range-extender with two WR1300)

With Cudy's stock-firmware, I had 50-75 MBits/s (measured with iperf),
Then I switched to OpenWRT, using cudy's OpenWRT-version - it had the worst performance (10-14MBit/s).
With your version, I had 18-21MBit/s,
and surprisingly, with latest OpenWRT Snapshot, I had 19-37 MBit/s.

So, basically your version works, but "official" openWRT performs a bit better - but unfortunately, the WIFI-Performance (on 5GHz) of Cudy's Stock-firmware performs better than all openWRT-versions I tested.

Is this some known resp. expected behavior? Or can it be finetuned to get the same performance as stock-firmware?

(Remark: I have no clue why snapshot works now quite well, while it did not work last week at all - I suspect that I broke the router or its config while trying get openWRT on it, e.g. I accidentally also flashed a v2-firmware due to the link in https://openwrt.org/toh/hwdata/cudy/cudy_wr1300_v2 . Whatever it was, the firmware-recovery seemed to fix it. Sorry for the confusion.)

Cudy's non-openwrt firmware uses mediatek's proprietary driver that is not based on mt76. It will choose different data rates with the same signal strength as it uses different rate selection algorithms.

Do you actually see different signal strenghts reported on both ends? What is the actual tx power set on openwrt and on cudy's firmware?

Hi,

yes, there are different signal strength reported by my linux-laptop:
Cudy Stock-FW:
Quality=24/70 Signal level=-86 dBm

Cudy's OpenWRT:
Quality=18/70 Signal level=-92 dBm

OpenWRT Snapshot:
Quality=17/70 Signal level=-93 dBm

In OpenWRT, the Power set is
Current power: 23 dBm
as shown in LuCI.

However, I don't know how to show it in stock-firmware, it has a very limited UI, and no SSH access. Is there any way to figure out the tx power?
