Build OpenWrt for netgear R6800

Is there anyone ever built openwrt for netgear R6800?

CPU: MediaTek MT7621AT (880 MHz, 2 cores)
NAND Flash: 128 MiB (Macronix MX30UF1G18AC-TI)
RAM: 256 MiB (Nanya NT5CC128M16IP-DI)
USBs: USB 3.0, USB 2.0
Wireless Chips : 5G MediaTek MT7615N ( an+ac , 4x4:3), 2.4G MediaTek MT7615N ( bgn, 4x4:3)
Switch: MediaTek MT7621AT

Device details are from https://wikidevi.com/wiki/Netgear_R6800

There is no driver support for MT7615N yet (nor to be expected soon), the rest should be reasonably easy to port.

Got it, thanks @slh

This device got interesting again since there now is MT7615 support in the mt76 (fork). Just a heads up.

Does anyone know how far the 7615 family is from working with openwrt then? (Dlink dir-882, netgear R6800 etc)

There's no board support, for that people would need to share stuff like stock firmware boot logs and flash layout. Afaict that hasn't been done for any of these devices (DIR-878 has my interest, but I don't have it myself).

I'm interested In the DIR-882 or 878 as well, would it help to buy one and try connecting serial and give a dump of the flash layout?

It sure would

Do you guys think that this will work on our routers?

Hi, been testing R6800 (r13562-a241f439dc) for a few days when this happened.

Richard

An hour earlier, I had flashed the firmware, named openwrt-ramips-mt7621-netgear_r6800-squashfs-factory to my Netgear R6800.After finishing the process, the power light of the router is always on while others off. After trying to restore to factory default mode, it still did not work. Finally, I use nmrpflash back to the factory firmware and then it was the thing before I did the flash firmware. I downloaded the firmware from openwrt.org and had checked the sha256 sum. It seems some problems remain. Any ideas ?

I have solved this issue by degrading the firmware version to 1.0.42, DO NOT upgrade to the newest version,1.0.62, which would make the openwrt installation failed.Notably, After installing the snapshot of netgear R6800, you can not login via web ui, even after flashing the upgrade version. However, you can install the luci via ssh.

Please, where did you find that version ? You are talking about the openwrt firmware, not the negear one ? (versions numbers are vert similar) Thanks in advance !

For anyone passing here no issues here in latest snapshot, lastedt *.62 firmware.

I downloaded the firmware via https://openwrt.org/toh/hwdata/netgear/netgear_r6800_1.0. I flashed the INSTALL URL and then UPGRADE URL. It works if the original firmware of the router is 1.0.42, but would fail if you upgrade to the latest 1.0.62. That's my experience. Anything unclear ?Happy sharing with you.

I don't see this issue. Today I flashed the latest Netgear OEM firmware (1.0.62) and then immediately overwrote this with the latest r6800-squashfs-factory.img (http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/targets/ramips/mt7621/openwrt-ramips-mt7621-netgear_r6800-squashfs-factory.img). I was then able to ssh and install luci and then restore my backed up settings. Everything worked as expected. These latest builds appear to be a bit more stable with better 5G WIFI performance. Using speedtest from my mobile phone connected to wifi I was able to achieve 182Mbps down 39Mbps up on 5G. However, 2.4G WIFI was not so good with only 4.22Mbps down 33Mbps up, very odd.

Hi guys, how are your speeds with SQM properly set ? How is the performance vs stock ? I just got back to stock because i had a lot of packet loss, over ethernet on my ShadowPC..

It's been 9 months since this device has been added in a snapshot, any idea when it would be integrated in a stable build? I'm a little bit afraid of bricking my device by installing a snapshot manually.

The plan is to ultimately install domoticz on my router.

No real risk of bricking, and recovering is very easy (Netgear settings are preserved in my experience, that's amazing)
