AVM FritzBox 7520 - OpenWrt snapshot

I do all in this tutorial for my FritzBox 7520 (openwrt-snapshot)
https://openwrt.org/toh/avm/avm_fritz_box_7530

All steps are working fine. I can do a

sysupgrade -n /tmp/avm_fritzbox-7530-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin

After this, the box is rebooting and I can ping in on 192.168.1.1. But after rebooting, the Box is waiting for my tftp server again? when I start my tftp server again, the box is downloading the FRITZ7520.bin image, again and reboots in failsafe mode to do a sysupgrade again.
This steps are repeating and repeating, repeating and so on ...
Can anybodey help? Something wrong with the bootloader? How can I figured that out?

There was a similar report for the FRITZ!7530 a few weeks ago:

Do you have the same problem? Can you attach serial console to see what's going on?

I dont know, that I have the same problem. How do i do a serial console?
Can I check something in initramfs?

You need to disassemble the device and attach yout TTL-USB Adapter to the unpopulated UART pins.

In initramfs you could check which flash chip you have (just run dmesg and post the output) and what happens if you manually create the UBI volumes (I will have to lookup the commands).

Here the dmesg:

BusyBox v1.36.0 (2023-04-18 13:25:21 UTC) built-in shell (ash)

But I think I managed to install everything correctly, a time ago ...

The same Kioxia/Toshiba NAND that makes problems...

I assume that's the problem and that's actually the same as in the linked github: You have too many bad PEBs, Linux complains but work nevertheless, but U-Boot doesn't want to boot.

I had a device with such a Toshiba/Kioxia NAND, but I sold it. The two 7520 that I use have both Macronix NANDs and they work properly (both have 1 bad PEB).

You could try to recreate the UBI volume, but I don't know if that marks the bad PEBs as good again. Or you could try to find an UBI option that reserves more than 59 PEBs for bad PEB handling, that should make U-Boot happy again.

I'm not very familiar with UBI, maybe someone else knows how to recreate proper UBI volumes?

What a mess :frowning:
What are bad PEBs?
How do I recreate the UBI volume?
Why the original AVM firmware is booting, well?

PEB = Physical Erase Block; basically a bad area on your chip; for NAND, this is more or less normal - my devices both have 1 bad PEB (and not 59).

As mentioned: I don't know.

Linux should succeed to boot, this is what the dmesg output suggests. But U-Boot doesn't (see the linked github issue). And the AVM firmware does not use U-Boot.

I undestand, bad PEBs are bad blocks, like bad blocks on a HDD.

There is actually no easy way to get openwrt working with the Toshiba TC58NVG0S3HTA00 1G 3.3V 8-bit chip?
And I was so lucky to get a new FritzBox from my ISP.
What cloud I do? Should I sell it on ebay? What is the right FritzBox to buy? In the moment I use a FritzBox 7362SL and it works fine with ADSL. But my ISP will change to a newer DSL procedure. I know, the FritzBox 7362SL can VDSL, too.
I can ask my ISP for an exchange. But witch FritzBox I should take?

Well, I sold mine not because of the chip, but because the 7520 was way cheaper than this 7530. I bought the 7520s used, so they were cheap and had the Macronix IC.
I'm pretty sure there is a software solution for it - it's just a matter of how much time you can and want to invest in this.

If I were you, i would read up on the UBI commands and see if it's possible to specify the amount of reserved PEBs, reformat the UBI volume and try again to install OpenWrt.

You are right. I like to do some tricks on special hardware. I am a linux user since 20 years. All my PCs, laptops, raspberries running with linux. I was an assembler coder on the C64/Amiga, too  I have some experience in Python, C/C++
To reformat the UBI volumes, I have to use a TTL-USB? However, I have bought one of them. May be, I need it for other usefull things, too.
https://www.ebay.de/itm/115379773533

No, this can all be done from within the initramfs image, similar to this ubirmvol call that you need to remove the AVM firmware.

Could it be, that I can adjust the bad PEB number, in the kernel?

I will try this ... change the number of bad blocks ... clould it woks?

There is no PEB warning any more, but the same booting issue ...

Yes, because you fixed Linux while the problem with booting is in U-Boot at https://github.com/chunkeey/FritzBox-4040-UBOOT

You will either have to fix U-Boot the same way you did for Linux or figure out how to reserve more bad blocks in a volume.

I think I have to many bad PEBs to boot openwrt correctly. It boots only in ReadOnly mode.

[ 2.724674] ubi0 warning: ubi_eba_init: number of bad PEBs (59) is above the expected limit (20), not reserving any PEBs for bad PEB handling, will use available PEBs (if any)
[ 2.758521] ubi0: good PEBs: 813, bad PEBs: 59, corrupted PEBs: 0

Is there a way, to fix it?
