I have an asrock h97m / itx-ac motherboard with atheros ar8171 integrated ethernet card. How do I run openwrt?

You'll need to write the OpenWrt image for x86. If the CPU is 64bit select the 64 link, otherwise the appropriate link.

Do you have a hard drive on this system or some flash memory?

Openwrt is ok., but atheros ar8171 card not working.
What should I install to work? I was looking for kmod-alx kernel module, but I could not find it.

Do you have the lspci command? If yes what does it output when you run it?
What is the output of dmesg?

I can see 4 ethernet cards detected here. What seems to be the problem?

There are 5 Ethernet cards. 4 realtek 1 atheros. I want the atheros card to wan port.
I see only 4 cards in ifconfig.

I tried linuxmint live cd, which saw all 5 cards.

The necessary mainline kernel module would be alx, which currently isn't packaged for OpenWrt and is also globally disabled. The correct way would be to package it up, alternatively you could also build your own OpenWrt image with KERNEL_CONFIG_ALX=y.
