Hey guys so I will be moving soon. It’s a 50/50 chance I will be but the new house has a few options for Internet service. Xfinity ATNT fiber, gigabitnow (fiber) etc.. currently my house has only Xfinity available but there’s a new fiber company called gigabit now that has been laying down fiber lines. Now if I decide to not move I can sign up with that company and get fiber to the home service with the option of using my own router. But if I do move and decide to go with atnt. I know I will have to use their equipment which I really REALLY do not want to do. So my question is how do I bypass their equipment so that way I can just use my nanopi r6s directly connected to the ONT. what do I need to achieve this and how do I do it. Also I’m not sure if gigabitnow is coming to the new neighborhood that I might be moving into but they have been laying down fiber lines all through out my city. The new neighborhood is only 10 mins away from my current one but at the end I don’t know if the new house will have them. They were supposed to service in 2024 but they have been having issues with laying down fiber lines and setting up all the nodes. So it’s been a very slow process
Read customer reviews, most CPE equipment permits setting some sort of pass-through mode. Just check their simplest "media converter" style CPE-s, ideally but rarely available PON to SFP
I recently 'went fiber' and connected directly to the ONT without any action taken by the provider . Of course if they give you an ONT/Router combo box you need to do what brada4 said .
Who is your ISP?
just make sure you dont get free wifi ap from them - easy, say you have one.
Yeah I will make sure of that. I called att and they are going to service that address in 6-8 weeks so I will be switching. So basically I need a media converter so I can use the ont box to my router? And ditch their so called fiber modem?
Unsure, depends on how AT&T provisions their ONT routers...
I’ve heard they give you a fiber gateway but I’ve heard of techniques to bypass the gateway physically and use your own router to the ont with a media converter but I’m unsure of this process as I have never had fiber internet from ATT before.
I sent you the link to the simplest media converter they offer.
Yea I just watched a video. He bypassed it by using a was110 sfp stick thing and cloning the MAC address of the gateway. It’s a process but looks pretty simple. Only thing is I think you have to have a certain type of PON in order to achieve this.
Thats assuming you dont get caught if you burn whole pon segment with your star wars ont. No matter sales operator upsells you must rent wee-fee from them.
I highly doubt you’ll get caught. Just as long as you put back the gateway if you ever need an ATT tech visit.
And obv install a good quality fan to keep it cool while it’s running. Currently keep my nano pi r6s cooled that way even though it doesn’t need it.
