Mine was never used with stock firmware , i just opened the box after a year sitting in a corner to finally install openwrt 
Or just add the following in the wiki:
Some versions of mtd-write dont have the -r option and you get an error , in that case you can omit the -r option in the command and reboot manually afterwards"
