ASUS AX4200 bootloop after upgraded from 23.05.4 to snapshot build

I have been using ASUS TUF AX4200 with snapshot build (Kernel version 6.6.x) for a while.

But it sometime stopped working on both wired and wireless connection, and I had to reboot the router to make it work again. I think someone already reported this issue. The error was random.

Last time this problem happened when I tried to install HP wireless printer driver, which send packets to discover the printer. I think these packets might be the causes.

I was annoyed by the problem and tried to revert the router back to stock firmware. facinstall was working but one of my device couldn't connect to the stock software even for the latest version. I wanted to go back to Openwrt again and the bootloop happens.

  1. flash openwrt-23_tuf-ax4200-initramfs.trx -> fine.
  2. system upgrade to 23.05.4 -> fine
  3. system upgrade from 23.05.4 to snapshot -> bootloop happens.

When the bootloop happened, using the ASUS rescue with stock firmware would not work.

Thanks to @remittor, I used following methods to make it work again.

  1. Connect to LAN 1 of the router with my computer (no need to set static IP on the computer)
  2. Put router in rescue mode by pressing reset button during the bootloop (power LED blinking)
  3. Use rescue to flash asus_tuf-ax4200-ubi-cleaner.trx, wait for the reboot
  4. Power off and on the router, since it was cleared by above step, the router entered the rescue mode automatically
  5. upload stock firmware with the Rescue tool, wait for the reboot
  6. Now the stock firmware will work.

I tried couple times and it always had bootloop after I tried to upgrade from 23.05.x to snapshot. Both my custom builds and the builds downloaded from Openwrt have this problem.

Could someone help?

Thanks!

Snapshots are not guaranteed to uograde configuration or be upgraded. 99% it works though.
In rescue modevyou may want gfirstboot; reboot in failsafe.
Suvch breakage while somewhat expected is very annoying, do very controlled upgrades and resets to determine if 23.x->snapshot is a problem or snapshot as such, then with accurate versions fill isdue on github.

I just tested this scenario: everything works fine.

Hi @remittor,

I tried again today and same problem.

Maybe my partitions are different from yours? or there are some garbage data on my router caused the bootloop?

Do you have some commands I can run and generate some log/info for you to check?

Thanks a lot!

if I used facinstall to revert back to stock firmware, the previous configuration of the stoke firmware is still there. such as my WIFI setting (SSID, password, etc).

And that has nothing to do with OpenWRT

___ Yes ___

The problem here is, The snapshots (kernel v6.6) was working for a long time and now it crashed/boot-looped all the time. I suspected that some leftover data on my router caused the problem.

Could you help me find a way to clean up the data?

Thanks a lot. :slight_smile:

I have this problem also now. Possibly because I went back to stock factory firmware from snapshots a few weeks ago using factinstall.

Factory firmware works fine but snapshots brick the device.

Did you manage to solve your issue?

No. stuck with the official firmware for now.

I found the issue, at least on my device.

Asus updated the bootloader in recent stock firmware, not sure in which exact release, and obviously something about the partitions in flash has changed.

Still investigating.

I'm quite sure that reverting commit https://github.com/openwrt/openwrt/commit/25c9ebc6d405bf1bcf83fa4a59b315df245be0c0 should solve the issue.

Maybe @remittor could have a look to see what exactly is causing the boot loop issue.

Save mtdblock Bootloader and share this image.

File Deleted. Please renew

Wow.

I'll upload it to my drive.

New Asus bootloader:

Reuploaded

By looking at the bootloader build date in the bootlog, version 3.0.0.4.388_33474 or later does the bootloader update.

Hold on. I uploaded the wrong one sorry.

Corrected!

@remittor

Do you think the issue could be DEVICE_DTS_LOADADDR := 0x47000000 as you suggested the removal of this entry from the filogic.mk?

This bug only affects loading of large initramfs images. But in my TRX images it is fixed.

I don't even know when they are going to fix this. I reported this problem a long time ago and they assured me that it would be fixed, since they considered it a pretty serious error.

And I just looked at the master branch and I see that this parameter is also copy-pasted for new device Edgecore EAP111. Maybe this parameter is not needed there...

Yes, it is this commit that makes the image incompatible with newer u-boot.

Here's how the new u-boot (2024) differs from the old u-boot (2022):
