Can anyone recommend and ADSL modem/router which is OpenWrt friendly?
Not sure if such things exist, but do they make ADSL modems that can take a SIM card to enable switchover at some point?

Check the supported devices of https://openwrt.org/docs/techref/hardware/soc/soc.lantiq - don't go below vr9(!), you may not need VDSL, but the older SOCs are barely tested.
What is vr9?
Google dsl vr9 ?
Is there such a thing as an ADSL modem/router which can be used as an LTE/5G modem with the aid of a USB dongle?
Running Openwrt, sure.
Is this any good?
It's not what you were recommended a couple of posts further up this thread. What do YOU think the answer is?
It is on the list mentioned above.
I just wondered if there were any general opinions about this particular device.
Yes. Under "ar9". You should read both lines of the message.
I read it but didn't understand what you meant by
don't go below vr9(!).
This modem is marked as AR9 AFAICS.
Pure ADSL modem-routers will in all likelihood be severely under-powered for modern access speeds, after all ADSL2+ Annex J tops out around 25/3.5 Mbps (and few old ADSL modems will support Annex J) so unless your LTE/5G speed will be in the same ballpark (low single digit Mbps) that ADSL device will likely not be powerful enough to do useful processing.
In your position, I would look for a decent OpenWrt router and combine that with a DSL modem trat can be operated as bridged-modem.... then you can use mwan3 or similar to use dsl and LTE as failover (you will need a dedicated LTE/5G modem as well).
Many thanks for the advice. I don't really know much about the sort of devices you mention. I'd much prefer it if someone could just recommend something.
I'm basically looking for something to replace an ASUS DSL-N14U.
I would love to help, but my last first hand experience with ADSL was ~2013, hardly useful...
I would assume (but this is speculation) that an xrx200 device, like e.g. the old BT HomeHub5A might have a good enough ADSL part to be useful, but these are Annex A if I recall correctly, and will only work if the ISP uses Annex A as well. On the plus side the xrx200 is a decent (albeit underpowered) vdsl2 modem as well (but does not support profile 35b, likely not your problem).
For vdsl I would recommend the vrx518 class of devices (essentially select models of fritzbox 7530/7520), but I seem to recall that the ADSL part currently does not work, so these will not do what you need. Which is a pitty, as otherwise these, with their quad core arm a7 SoC, make decent all in one OpenWrt dsl-routers....
Question: Could you switch from ADSL to VDSL2?
Any opinions on a Fritz!Box 3370 802.11a
As long as you are aware of:
XOR
5 GHz, but can't use both at the same time.
As a mere xDSL modem, running OpenWrt, this is kind of immaterial - you just need to know it.
But given the single-802.11n-radio side of it, this wouldn't be a great wifi router (despite having enough flash/ RAM otherwise).
