Advice on new router possibilities

Hello,
im new here and might be somewhat uneducated on these in depth router topics. i hope i can learn this magic art to some degree. I have just had BeFibre installed after having a 6mb/s sky phone line setup. The new fibre is 900mps up n down. The router that is supplied is a "heights" router. It doesnt come with any documentation, just a quick start guide. It seems a bit odd to me that i cannot turn off the wifi or change the admin username or password. I am currently trying to get them to sort this out. I have had the new setup less than a month. The speeds are sometimes very good, but other times a bit erratic. Im hoping i can get a reasonably user friendly replacement router that i can setup myself . im hoping someone may be able to point me in the right direction on a open wrt router for newbs. I really dont need wifi so much just a good fast wired connection with possibly built in vpn. Any help greatly appreciated. im in the uk

if you want the VPN to max out your connection, check what kind of device/SoC you need, by reading A Wireguard comparison DB.

Do you have an all-in-one device? Or do you have a router and a separate ONT?

If you have an all-in-one device, your possibilities for improvement are reduced, especially if you do not have any access to the configuration on the ISP router.

thanks for the help
i think this is right

i have a modem on the wall and a router that has wireless inside, and i think 5g as well. Its a "heights" router never heard of them before (there doesnt seem to be any documentation for it and there is sparse info onlinehttps://www.heights-t.com/products/ht-360axe ). It has a lot of configurations that are possible inside the menus. But, i cannot change the password or turn off the wifi, which to me is weird. I was looking for preferable a wired router i could replace that "heights" one with. I was wondering if this would be any good, just as a simpler solution.

ASUS RT-AX5400

ASUS TUF Gaming AX4200

i could just turn off the wifi. are these any good
i would like to get a simpler open wrt type maybe later, im not as clever as some of the people on here .

TUF AX4200 quite good yes, Filogic 830 is a performant and stable platform. Just be sure to follow the installation guide for that device carefully since it's locked down from Asus. If you can get a GL-MT6000 instead I recommend that since it's a simple sysupgrade flash to install OpenWrt and same SoC with more ram and storage.

Yes, you have a separate ONT, that's good news. Do you use the landline ports? There is no support for that on OpenWrt.

Thank you sir
No I don’t use any landline . 90 % of the time it hard wired to my pc. If friends come over they may use Wi-Fi but it’s rare and mostly they can use 4g/5g now . So I just need a secure wired fast connection , with a nice router that’s relatively simple to configure .

Appreciate the help
I ordered the gl mt 6000 , I’ll update the firmware when it arrives , and try to set it up . Then I’ll look at flashing and tweaking it . It sounds like the interface is very straightforward so I’m hoping it’s an easy start. Thankyou very much on the advice
