Of course, I tried one more time afterwards and successfully got the (SASQUATCH)# prompt, but failed to read back the mw command. I think my serial connection is flaky and is occasionally flipping bits 
So, looks like a user error… following up so nobody takes the above as sign of some (other) cursed U-Boot version or something of that kind.
