Added security by disabling WAN ping?

I have seen an option in other firmwares like tomatousb to ignore ping requests from the WAN for added security.

  1. Is the recommended way to achieve this on LEDE simply to uncheck Network>Firewall>Traffic Rules>Allow Ping
    ping

  2. Is there any downside to doing this?

Yes, or simply deleting that rule entirely.

You'll hamper network troubleshooting or latency check if you ever need to ping your router's public IP from the Internet.
