Topic: Trendnet TEW-632BRP, TEW-652BRP, DLink DIR-615 C1, CC WLN2206 working!

The content of this topic has been archived between 29 Mar 2018 and 29 Apr 2018. Unfortunately there are posts – most likely complete pages – missing.

maybs seems to be right: OpenWrt will NOT run on current (v2.x) revisions of the TEW-652BRP, as Trendnet has moved it to Realtek.

Also, don't try flashing a 652-v2.1r router with the official Trendnet 652-v2.0r firmware. You will brick it, and then find there is no 2.1r firmware available anywhere on the Internet.

So should we try and flash this as any realtek based devices. Or is there a dd-wrt file we can run? Or does no one know yet?

Argh .. well this is getting annoying :\

I've got a TEW-632 flashed with Kamikaze r14959 and I'm trying to update the firmware. I'm not too sure what happened, but somehow I've killed the webui and I can't seem to reinstall it via opkg.

So, I've got 2 options : update via mtd in ssh, or update via recovery mode.

Now I can get into recovery mode, and have tried to update. I wait about 10 minutes for the image to upload ( not sure if it's supposed to let me know when it's completed or not .. hasnt so far ). Eitherway I reboot the router after about 10-15 minutes and end up with the same system I had before.

I havn't tried with mtd so far since I can't seem to find a .bin file to update with.

Anyone have an idea ??

Problem solved ... stupid recovery console wouldn't work under either Firefox or Midori on my linux box.

Worked fine under IE8 on a windows box.

-_-

I just bought a TEW-652BRP and found out they have apparently changed from the Atheros chipset to Realtek!!!  I bought this thing because I specifically wanted Atheros!  My first clue that something was different was when I opened up the case and saw that it looked different from pictures I had seen, and I noticed the Realtek logo on one of the chips.

I tried using the recovery mode to load my trunk Kamikaze firmware but it complained that the hardware ID was incorrect.  So, I downloaded the Trendnet firmware from their website and took a look at the end of the file.  Instead of
AP81-AR9130-RT-080609-05
it has
RTK-RT8196B-RT-090109-00

So I guess now I get to find out if that RealTek chipset is supported by OpenWRT... why do manufacturers make such a drastic change without changing their model number???  I would send this back but the first thing I did was rip out the plastic pieces covering the vents for better cooling.

I can confirm maybs's findings.

After trying valiantly for days to flash a brand-new TEW-652BRP with the '652 firwmare, '632 firmware, and even DIR-615 firmware, and getting "Incorrect hardware ID image, Please check !" each time, I got the firmware from their website which indeed ends in the RTK phrase maybs cited.

FCC ID: S9ZTEW652BRP2 (details: http://www.fcc.gov/oet/ea/fccid/ ; type just "s9z" in the first box; at the time of this posting, the TEW-652BRPv2 is the first one.)

Will try to post pictures soon.

On another thread here ( https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?id=9925 ), this project for the RTL8186 was linked to: http://sourceforge.net/projects/wive-ng/ based on http://sourceforge.net/projects/rtl8186/ (the project page is in Russian here: http://wive-ng.sourceforge.net/ ).

Ugh!

edit: OP, perhaps you want to mention that v2.0R TEW-652BRP are *NOT* supported!

Steps:

Build or get a recent (kamikaze trunk) image for the 632 (the 652 images keep getting rejected)
unplug the power
Hold the reset button down while plugging router in
when the status light starts flashing browse to 192.168.1.1
upload your image

Hi cptdondo

Did you find a fix for the changing mac address on reboot issue?

If so where is the image for the trendnet 652 located?

Thanks

To contribute I would like to inform YAll that new egg have the dlink DIR-615 c1 on sale for 19.95 free shipping
Just got mine and confirming it is C1.

Please let me know safe how to instructions to flush this unit with openwrt.

Also list of benefits to use open wrt vs orig firmware would be appreciated.

Hi all,
I'm able to load Kamikaze (r15686) with my DIR-615 C1.  However it doesn't save my setting after reboot (remove power), but it did save the root password.

Does anyone know why?
Thanks,

After successfully flashing my DIR-615C with an openwrt snapshot image, I got overconfident and built my own image with a patch to support the LEDs.  I flashed it via the luci web interface, and now it seems to be bricked.

Symptoms: normal boot doesn't respond to pings at all.  Emergency restore mode provides the web page for flashing, but every image I've uploaded results in no response (no error message, but the http server is still there waiting for the next attempt).

Unfortunately this board has no serial port, so I don't know what else to try.  Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Hello everyone! I am able to load Kamikaze R15686 on my DIR-615 C1. Able to connect with an ethernet cable and get an IP thru DHCP with no problem, but the wireless seems to be an issue. I've set up a WEP key, yet in Windows it still picks it up as an Unsecured Network Connection. Windows was able to connect to it by automatically disabling the WEP encryption and was able to be assigned an IP. Has anyone setup Kamikaze R15686 with WEP successfully? Here's the wireless config file:

config 'wifi-device' 'wlan0'
        option 'type' 'mac80211'
        option 'disabled' '0'
        option 'channel' '6'

config 'wifi-iface'
        option 'device' 'wlan0'
        option 'network' 'lan'
        option 'mode' 'ap'
        option 'ssid' 'TESTOPEN'
        option 'encryption' 'wep'
        option 'key' 'abcdef1234567890abcdef1234'

Any help would be most grateful! Many Thanks!

Hello all,

I am totally new to this, but just picked up the DIR-615 C1. I was wondering to those who have successfully loaded what image you used? I tried today using dlink's firmware update page in their firmware using openwrt-ar71xx-vmlinux.bin, but I kept getting a message that it failed to upload (sorry do not have access to the exact message at the moment). For all those who have successfully flashed this model I would appreciate any information on how you were able to do this. I apologize for all the newb questions...

I used this image: http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/ … uashfs.uni

Depending on how recent your dlink firmware is, you might find that the web flash procedure complains about wrong hardware type or damaged image.  In that case, try patching the hardware ID at the end of the .uni file, from
  AP81-AR9130-RT-070614-02
to
  00AP81-AR9130-RT-070614-02
(i.e. insert two '0' characters, increasing file size by 2 bytes)

Warning: I'm still pretty new at this myself, and although the process above worked fine for me, I have since bricked my dlink by flashing it with a different image.  So take it all with a grain of salt, or get some additional confirmation from more experienced folks here.

Thanks for the reply.

I attempted using the file you mentioned and received the following error (currently using latest dlink firmware)...

"The uploaded firmware file may not be correct. You may have uploaded a file that is not intended for this device, or the uploaded file may be corrupted.

If the uploaded file is correct, it is possible that the device may be too busy to properly receive it right now. In this case, please try the upload again. It is also possible that you are logged in as a 'user' instead of an 'admin' - only administrators can upload new firmware.

The Gateway will not be reprogrammed."

I am trying to insert the '0's as mentioned, but whenever I open it up in vim to edit everything is random characters and I cannot find AP81-AR9130-RT-070614-02. How do I edit this file? Thanks in advance...

You need a hex editor, so that you can edit the binary file. Don't try to use a "text editor" like notepad or wordpad...

The ID code is at the end of the file, the last few bytes there.

If you're using a Linux system, you can use Emacs.  It will indeed look like random characters, but go to the very end of the buffer and you'll see the ID string. Then backspace 24 characters, type '00', and save the file.

To be safe, check (using "ls -l") that the new file is just 2 bytes longer than the original, and that the original is a prefix of the new version (use "cmp -l" -- it should just say "EOF on <original file>", no other differences).

Ok, thanks to you both I was able to add the zeros and flash the modified file to my router. Unfortunately it didnt turn out as I had hoped. When I attempt to connect by entering 192.168.1.1 in my browser it changes to 'http://192.168.1.1/luci' in my address bar and the browser window simply displays 'Not Found'. I am not sure what went wrong as it seemed to work alright. Is there a way that I can reflash this or did I just make a fancy paper weight?

Maybe the image you installed didn't have the luci package pre-installed.  But you should still be able to telnet in (login as root, no password), or ssh in once you've set a root password.

From there, try "opkg list_installed" to see if the various luci packages are present.
Assuming they're not, you can enable networking via the command line (see various howtos in the wiki), and install the luci-kamikaze package using opkg.  Then the web UI should work.

If the packages are there already, I don't know why the web UI isn't working ...

Hi ecc,

I am running into the same problem as adssse.

I used your suggestion and telnetted into the router to list the installed packages. Below is the relevant output; as you can see luci seems to be installed but I am still not able to http into the web UI. Any suggestions?

luci-core - 0.9+svn5604-1
luci-http - 0.9+svn5604-1
luci-lmo - 0.9+svn5604-1
luci-lucid - 0.9+svn5604-1
luci-nixio - 0.9+svn5604-1
luci-px5g - 0.9+svn5604-1
luci-sgi-cgi - 0.9+svn5604-1
luci-sys - 0.9+svn5604-1
luci-theme-base - 0.9+svn5604-1
luci-theme-openwrt - 0.9+svn5604-1
luci-uci - 0.9+svn5604-1
luci-web - 0.9+svn5604-1

Try adding:
luci-admin-full (or luci-admin-mini)
luci-fastindex
luci-theme-openwrt
luci-theme-base

I have a 632, I've tried various firmwares listed on here. Currently I have http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/ … uashfs.uni and it works - mostly.

I have a problem with several packages that I want to use. ntpclient, wol, etherwake all give an error similar to: symbol 'stdout': can't handle reloc type 0x7e

I haven't been able to find any resolution to this. I'm thinking I'm going to have to try another image. But the question is which one?I tried the most recent bare bones from
https://sites.google.com/site/fratzicu/ … ware-files, which worked - but then I couldn't update with opkg. After changing the config file, it complained that the packages weren't appropriate for this architecture.

I'm just trying to get wireless, and wake on lan running with ssh - seems like it should be pretty straightforward .... smile

I took a look and have the same packages installed. I moved luci-admin-full_0.8.7-1_mips.ipk over to the router and attempted the command 'opkg install luci-admin-full_0.8.7-1_mips.ipk'. Unfortunately I received the following:
Collected errors:
* Packages were found, but none compatible with the architectures configured

I also tried the same command but with 'ipkg install'. I am sure I am missing something obvious, but would appreciate any assistance.

Did you try opkg update? I missed that you had themes installed but don't see the admin page.

I actually downgraded my firmware to 0.8, r15686. I had to change the url in /etc/opkg.conf to http://downloads.openwrt.org/kamikaze/8 … /packages/ and was able to download packages. You might want to take a look at your conf file.

I think luci is broken in the current trunk and cannot be fixed with the above... After flashing my DIR-615 C1 with the snapshot image from Dec. 3, I installed both fastindex and admin-full (which requires a whole bunch of other dependency packages installed as well) but nothing helped and I still get "not found" when trying to access the web interface. Also tried other things like clearing the temp directory and so on, nothing helped.

I know that everything you can do with luci you can do with the CLI, but I am not familiar with the linux networking/routing config. Is there short guide somewhere... I think last time I used CLI on a router was about 10 years ago, and those were Ciscos.

Adssse,

I am not sure if this helps you or not but I downloaded the r15686 Kamikaze firmware (openwrt_r15686_ar71xx-dir-615c1-squashfs.uni) and applied the '00' 2-byte substituition to the firmware file that ecc suggested before.

LuCI seems to work fine with this build. After I enabled Wifi thru' the LuCI web interface, I was at least able to connect my laptop via wifi and surf the web with it.

Hope this helps.

It appears that 0.8 r15686 works, except for a nasty bug (https://dev.openwrt.org/ticket/5403) that makes the MAC addresses randomize.

For me, this was enough to make my cable modem unwilling to hand out a usable IP. With the stock firmware, it grabbed an IP just fine.

Anyone else having this issue?
