Is there a way to manually add them from a shell since they arent discoverable by luci (why no option to manually put in ssid?)
seems like a very weird oversight in such an extensive software.
please help, as this is very important.

I haven't tested this myself, but in luci wouldn't the following work:
Network -> Wireless -> Add -> select "Client" and enter ssid
