A little bit more about this router, which I understand was made by D-Link exclusively for Talk:Talk -

On the face of it, the fact that it already runs a distribution of Linux might make it a good candidate for OpenWRT:

Seeing as I cannot add to the Table of Hardware in the OpenWRT site, I hope that somebody who can will read this and do it for me.  Here are some images of the router:  Front, Rear and Circuit Board.  Please do the honourable thing and credit me though...  :-)

To open the case cleanly, first wedge off the two rubber feet and then unscrew the two screws concealed beneath.  Carefully, using a plastic implement, work your way around the case, unsnapping the front from the body.

The following hyperlinks lead to photographic images of the router.

Front View

Rear View
Connectors

  • Power: 12V/1A adapter-in-a-plug

  • USB: USB2 socket

  • Fibre: 1 x 10/100 Fast Ethernet socket

  • LAN1 ... LAN4: 4 x 10/100 Fast Ethernet sockets

  • Reset:  Reset button (to factory settings)

  • ADSL:  ADSL2+ socket

Circuit Board
Unfortunately the large heatsink in the centre is soldered on to the circuit board and, because I lack the correct tools, I am unwilling to remove it.

Sooooo...  a visit to the D-link web site turned up some interesting results...

I found router source code labelled as for the DSL-3780, published here.

I could not find the DSL-3780 in any search results or in the list, BUT the DSL-3680 source is labelled as, 'GPL: DSL-3780 B1 F/W v1.04t (for TT)

So perhaps two birds might be able to be killed with the one stone  :-)

The source for Kernel 2.6.22.15 can be found here.  So asking, 'what's the difference?' might be one way of approaching this...

Being a firmware rookie I could use some help...  :-)

I have posted on the hardware hacking forum which appears to be a more appropriate place for this discussion to continue

Thanks for the link, tmo26.  I encountered problems and e-mailed as you advised.

Update:  I have tried several times to contact the WikiDev people but no reply and my issue is still not fixed.  I tried the updates in IE, Firefox & Chrome, both logged in and logged out, but each time I faced the message, 'Update Failed.'

OK so I threw it in to a corner for a long time and then came back to it.

The pinouts for the Serial Connectors are as per the D-Link DSL 3680:

How to connect to the Serial Port of this specific device:

JP1 pinout, 3.3V serial 115,200baud 8N1

[x] : TX
[x] : GND
[x] : VCC 3.3V
[ ]
[x] : RX

Here's the boot sequence from the terminal output:

In the hardware list the support for the 3680  is stated as impossible but doesnt state why. Anyone recall why they thought it was impossible.

i have a 3780, which is very similar, that I have spare and wanted to install openwrt on it.

Thanks

16MB RAM of DSL-3680 is too little.

Sure, it may well be impossible for the 3680, but this is the 3780, which has 64MB RAM:  It should be do-able with 64MB RAM given that the Netgear DGN-3500 (https://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/netgear/dgn3500b) also has 64MB RAM and, for many years now, has been able to run OpenWRT with LUCI.

I did open a post to call for help over at LEDE (https://forum.lede-project.org/t/d-link-dsl-3780/8750) and I have some resources linked to from that post, including images and source code. Maybe these will help someone either to help me to implement on the 3780, or to do it themselves...  :-)

The discussion might have continued from here.
