It installs, yes.

Great, Thanks!

The nightly build image from the device main page does not work for me. I get TX timeouts on the WAN interface. The image from obsy is working fine on the same router.

Same here, I tried Trunk from downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots a month ago, same problem, I had no way to get internet to wget and sysupgrade I had to ncat the opsy .bin to be able to sysupgrade to it.

can i install mw3 on wr842nd ?

you mean mwan3 for multi-wan ? yes, that works, actually I have working on mine since about 10 days.
or you talk about Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3... Yes, I think that could be installed too...

why when I build from trunk doesn't compile for v3, only v1 and v2?

Probably because the build profile was not commited to the trunk, I think that the developers are commiting changes to LEDE more than OpenWrt repositories.
Anyway, some months ago I tried the LEDE trunk in this router and wifi and lan it doesn't work, i just was able to use telnet in recovery mode and write the sysupgrade firmware file (the version on this thread) through telnet.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try to build from source LEDE

ok, just remember to do a dmesg to see bootlog and after 5 minutes browsing web using wifi too from two devices if possible. (if that works fine then you should be fine)

Gathered firmware from source LEDE for 842v3. On the surface, everything works, no problems.
at the stage menuconfig select the desired version (v3 842)

Great! thanks for the update!

Hi, I am just about to buy this version of router TL-WR842N(EU) (HW Ver 3.1)

And I would like to know which version of firmware is best to be able to setup openvpn , easily through web interface
"wiki.openwrt.org/toh/tp-link/tl-wr842nd
Bigger image, with luci, works ok:
dl.eko.one.pl/luci/chaos_calmer/ar71xx/luci-15.05-ar71xx-generic-tl-wr842n-v3-squashfs-factory.bin
dl.eko.one.pl/luci/chaos_calmer/ar71xx/luci-15.05-ar71xx-generic-tl-wr842n-v3-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin
"
or if  Gargoyle
tplink-forum.pl/Gargoyle/1.9.1.1/
or others LEDE have it (i mean openvpn enabled)

I just know their names (skimmed through this forum), I didn't  test any of them.
I have experience with DDWRT only. Flashed it on a few routers and used VPN PPTP (thus just a 4mb flash on those)
I am buying this router I guess best bang for the buck (v good hardware) to be able to use OpenVPN

Any response appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, just go back to some replies ago: https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php … 85#p330785 and come back if you need further help.
The TL-WR842N(EU) is great, if you can buy it cheap don't heasitate...
it has 16mb flash and 64mb RAM, cpu at 650 MHz and mine has nice white looking with two tall antennas.

Openvpn and all other opkg software packages as well in ar71xx should work just fine on this router.
you have plenty of flash space to play with many things without need of an extroot, but if you want, it has usb 2.0 too. the power supply has enought power for a external 2.5 harddrive too.

Regarding to OpenVPN stuff if you know how to do it in linux or windows using configuration files you shouldn't have any problems. if you just followed up client configuration tutorials for DD-WRT GUI in the past then I recommend to read this link that I wrote some months ago: https://github.com/jlund/streisand/wiki … VPN-Client

if you want to set up OpenVPN as server just need the usual: 1) a proper working openvpn configuration file for server, open and redirect tcp/udp port in modem-router/s-firewall and you will get up and running easily.
Keep in mind that OpenVPN on OpenWRT based firmwares works with both UCI config and with standard openvpn configuration files.

Error is :* opkg_install_cmd: Cannot install package luci.

try with

opkg update

and then wait until finish
and then try again

opkg install luci

or just both on single line:

opkg update; opkg install luci

The usual problem with people "very good with linux" is that opkg cache are not preserved between reboots on embedded OpenWrt like on Desktop/Server linux Debian apt, yum, etc..

but if error persist please post output of:

df -h; free -h

those commands shows filesystems free space and memory (RAM) free space.

Tell us if it worked.

How can I install OpenWrt with LuCI without internet?

AnteLo wrote:

you could transfer the md5sum and sysupgrade bin file using SCP, but it is easier to use WAN, if you don't have an ethernet rj45 cable you could connect your router to another wireless access point using below commands:
then you should be able to perform wget to sysupgrade and md5sum

uci del network.wan.ifname

# If our network range is same as our wifi '192.168.1.1' then we must use another one and later RECONNECT:
uci set network.lan.ipaddr='192.168.9.1'
# settings:
uci set wireless.radio0.disabled='0'
uci set wireless.radio0.channel='auto'
uci set wireless.@wifi-iface[0].network='wan'
uci set wireless.@wifi-iface[0].mode='sta'
uci set wireless.@wifi-iface[0].encryption='psk2' # chose psk if WPA or psk2 is WPA2

# wireless name and password:
uci set wireless.@wifi-iface[0].ssid='Wireless Network SSID'
uci set wireless.@wifi-iface[0].key='wireless-password'

# restart network settings, if network address was changed you will need to reconnect to the new ip address
/etc/init.d/network restart

to upgrade remember to download bin file to /tmp (is on RAM) I Dont know if this URL is the same that he give you, but change it if you need to and md5sum should be on same directory as usual.

# Download firmware and md5sum (to check it)
cd /tmp && wget http://dl.eko.one.pl/chaos_calmer/ar71xx/openwrt-15.05-ar71xx-generic-tl-wr842n-v3-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin # OpenWrt Chaos Calmer 15.05.1 (r49398)
cd /tmp && wget http://dl.eko.one.pl/chaos_calmer/ar71xx/md5sums

# check md5sum:
md5sum -c md5sums 2> /dev/null | grep OK
# upgrade -v stands for 'verbose' will show progress of upgrade process
sysupgrade -v -c /tmp/openwrt-*-sysupgrade.bin # Preserve config
sysupgrade -v -n /tmp/openwrt-*-sysupgrade.bin # NO preserve config - Restore Defaults

AnteLo wrote:

That is strange, check if you can download the file using your computer connected to the same wireless connection...
may be the server is down, or there is another problem with DNS or someshit like that

# this one has luci embedded (the one that @Heinz pointed you):
http://dl.eko.one.pl/luci/chaos_calmer/ … pgrade.bin

# this one was used by me since some months ago, very stable and tiny, I was able to install luci with opkg successfully
http://dl.eko.one.pl/chaos_calmer/ar71x … pgrade.bin

change Your LAN IP to 192.168.2.1

use command:
uci set network.lan.ipaddr=192.168.2.1
uci commit network
/etc/init.d/network restart

Now You can connect to router using IP 192.168.2.1

WOW,thanks you so much.I conected to my wifi and I typed:cd /tmp
