Use tftp and recover mode to get the .bin in place.

  • Install tftp (tftpd32)

  • Set your IP-address to 192.168.0.66

  • Rename the factory bin file "openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-wa901nd-v4-squashfs-factory.bin" to "wa901ndv4_tp_recovery.bin" and place it so that tftp can pick it up (same folder as tftp works)

  • Start tftp

  • Hold reset for a couple of seconds while turning on the accesspoint

  • Check status of the download (tftp - log viewer). You should see a fetch of the bin file

  • If successful the accesspoint reboots and is accessible on 192.168.1.1 after a minute or so

Worked for me from same stock firmware version you got.

For some reason tftpd32 stops around 20-30%, different every time.
tried with negotiation and pxe compatability ticks, different firmwares, all the same
log in tftpd32

Hostle, I have backported your patch to 15.05.1, but I'd like confirmatioin the image works allright before sending it to the OpenWrt devs.

So I have built 15.05.1 images which can be downloaded here. If the site does not resolve, please try with different DNS settings like Google's DNS or OpenDNS.

If someone can confirm the images work OK, so I can upstream the backported patch? Thanks.

Hi,

i want to test yours but i get this error:
Error code: 18005
Upgrade unsuccessfully because the version of the upgraded file was incorrect. Please check the file name.

I have the EU version with
Firmware Version:
3.16.9 Build 160304 Rel.36585n
Hardware Version:
WA901ND v4 00000000

have you an idea?

Nice hostle19,

with your files it works. But i get authentication error on WLAN encryption @ iPhone.
My Solution: i used upgrade file from Borromini an then it works.

The firmware image files created by hostle19 are very much appreciated as he put efforts to include Luci in the image. It is good if you want to use the standard features built-in the firmware.

However, if you want to install some packages like nodogsplash from the repository, it will fail due to the kernel version difference (as of April 27 2016).

On the other hand, if you take the firmware image from the snapshot trunk, the packages will install fine but Luci can't be installed due to lack of space available.

The best way is to generate a new firmware image file from the pre-compiled moduless taken from the trunk. OpenWrt wiki [...] explains very well how to do so. This page [...] was also helpful.

I removed the ppp and pppoe packages since it is an AP and added luci module in the image using the following command.

make image PROFILE=TLWA901 PACKAGES="luci"

Thank you, wonderful people of OpenWrt community.

DJ

Hi DJPark,
I am looking to load nodogsplash on my WA901ND v4 aswell but I am a definite nood when comes to OpenWRT. I have managed to install OpenWRT with LuCi as per the posts in this forum.

Would you be able to provide me with the bin file you created with nodogsplash and LuCi?
I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks, Jono

You should have access now, look for a thread called "Tp-link wa901nd V4 modded bin for openwrt upgrade" there you will find the solution to flashing the 901 V4

Hi Hostle19, can i have access to the download site. My username: epignatta08

I wanna try Chaos Calmer, because the original tp-link firmware is bringing me some headaches.

Thx in advance.

Hi Hostle19, can you give me access to the download site, my username is teixeria1972

Hi,

short question about to this.
I have successfully tested the trunk version my TL-WA901ND v4, but I need more packages.

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3932160 Sep 1 17:09 openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-wa901nd-v4-squashfs-factory.bin
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3407876 Sep 1 17:09 openwrt-ar71xx-generic-tl-wa901nd-v4-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin

According to the instructions I have build my on firmware.

cd OpenWrt-ImageBuilder-15.05.1-ar71xx-generic.Linux-x86_64
make info|grep -i 901
TLWA901:
    TP-LINK TL-WA901N/ND

Check and use the profile...

make image PROFILE=TLWA901 PACKAGES="..."

I have expected files with "v4" but there are only "v2" and "v3". Did I do something wrong?

Is it possible to use the "v3" sysupgrade to migrate my trunk-installation to the custom firmware?

Thanks in advance for your answers
