Topic: Netgear Trek N300 (PR2000)

The content of this topic has been archived on 4 Apr 2018. There are no obvious gaps in this topic, but there may still be some posts missing at the end.

Hi all,

Has anyone tried adding support for the Netgear PR2000? Seems like a good cheap portable router. 2x2:2 MIMO config, USB, WAN and LAN port.

There is some info here: https://wikidevi.com/wiki/Netgear_PR2000

If no one else has I plan to give it a go. Seems like most of the hardware is already supported on other routers but still need to identify the Flash chip so will need to open it up.

(Last edited by ddfczm on 7 Aug 2014, 21:06)

Opened it up and had a closer look.

CPU/Wifi/Eth: MediaTek MT7620N SOC
RAM: 64 MiB (EtronTech EM68B16CWQD-25H)
Flash: MX25L12845EMI-106

I can't find too much information about the Flash memory chip & how big it is. I assume this is the data sheet for the family of chip: http://www.macronix.com/Lists/DataSheet … 20v1.9.pdf

Here is the mtd info from dmesg. Looks like its 16MB

I visit this URL:
routerlogin.net/setup.cgi?todo=debug
when i connect to PR2000 to enable debug mode, which the telnet can be turned on.
then telnet routerlogin.net
"cat /proc/mtd" show such result:

Also the netgear  PR2000 firmware open source code can be download at:

PR2000 really a good net gear.  There's only one reason i want to update firmware is want to install shadowsock on it.
If someone know other solution that the shadowsock can be installed except change the whole system. please tell me. thanks,

I am looking to buy some of these routers to my work place, since they are very portable but I really want openwrt on them before so we can both use usb modems and maybe increase the output voltage on the antennas.
Any one working on it?

Hey there!

I'd just like to know if someone did test to install OpenWRT on the PR2000 yet?

Since jiwei posted the SourceCode in the End of 2014 perhaps someone did some more testing?

What I found when I searched the web for the MediaTek SOC you already mentioned here is this:
https://wikidevi.com/wiki/WRTnode_(MT7620N)
https://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots … ages/luci/
https://dev.openwrt.org/ticket/18849

Perhaps anyone is able to do some further testing with this?

...would love to see OpenWRT on the PR2000 because of it's VPN-Ability smile

Thx & best Regards,
SchwarzerRiese

I am interested in this device now.

I use the TP-Link TL-WR710N extensively:
https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?pid=238822

Previously the pricing on the PR2000 was out of whack, but now it looks like it's priced appropriately in the US market.

This Netgear PR2000 is very similar in that it has a built-in power plug, a USB port, and two 100BASE-T ports.

Internally, the PR2000 has twice the RAM and flash storage as the TL-WR710N. That's a big plus. The PR2000 also has a switch and some additional LEDs. It also looks like it can take power in from USB, though that's not interesting to me. CPU is slightly faster on the Mhz, but that's a poor comparison.

On the downside, the swivel antenna looks gimmicky and I'd be worried about that getting broken off out in the field. Also, the MediaTek chip is an issue due to their exceptionally bad Linux/Android reputation. Netgear's reputation isn't very good either.

I will probably buy one and give it a try.

Hello,
Thank you for your interest in this device, I'd really like to be able to test OpenWRT on this powerful little device.

Let us know if you decide to investigate a bit more.

I just bought this device too, tell me if you need a volunteer big_smile

I also have several NETGEAR N300 PR2000 Trek (http://youtu.be/Fyo7l8J5Q7I  |   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lA4vwYXqLZ0) and offer this to the OpenWRT firmware for testing.
Travel Router, Range Extender, Access Point and Wireless Bridge function quite well but unfortunately the original software is very Basic. The device is small, uses very little power, and thanks to USB completely independent of mains supplies with a power bank.
It works so well to share Internetverbidungen that require authentication page to enter credentials, z. B. Hotspots Telekom, etc in hotels ..
It is the only Travel Router, which can be very easily retrofitted with external antenna connections even.

With the Netgear OpenWrt PR2000 would then really perfect!

Very, very thanks, if you could provide for the great part OpenWrt firmware!

Pauline

Pauline

Agree, the router is really nice, however it lacks OpenWRT. Wish to see it on the supported list!

Maybe someone could check what processor it actually is?

Hi, this is my first time posting here and I'm relatively new to OpenWRT, so please forgive the noobness.

I have a PR2000, Ver 1.3 with firmware V1.0.0.14. I would like to get OpenWRT running on it.

I can enable debug mode with routerlogin.net/setup.cgi?todo=debug, but admin/password doesn't get me into telnet. I've tried other username/passwords like Netguy/Netdog, etc. but nothing works.

I figured out how to get a serial connection, here is what I have learned:

TP9=Tx
TP8=Vcc
TP7=Rx
TP10=G

Baud=57600

Here is what I got during boot:

I'm not 100% sure where to go from here, but this was just step 1. Now its time to learn step 2. I hope this info helps, and if anyone can give me any guidance from this point on I would appreciate it.

Ok, more specifically firmware is V1.0.0.14_1.0.1.

Telnet worked with Login: root and no password. I thought I had tried that, guess not.

Some info from telnet. I know some has been posted already, I was just poking around. Heres a full copy:

nice work.

One word of caution with the PR2000.

It appears to have a known failure mode when plugged into any AC outlet with a surge suppressor.

In our office, it works great when plugged into a normal wall outlet.

When I plug it into a power strip with a surge suppressor inside, it drops Wi-Fi or reboots every couple of minutes, making it impossible to maintain connectivity.

I recently plugged it into a normal wall outlet inside a fire department EOC, and it behaved the same way. When I asked "there's a whole-building surge suppressor in the electrical panel, right", the answer was affirmative, and I put the Trek aside.

I found one reference to this as being the cause, and lots of threads complaining about the problem, without a good solution.

If it weren't for that issue, I'd give it five stars.

@somni: Thanks, we'll see if it ends up being worth the time.

@PetesGuide: I noticed some odd power behavior with 5V/1A USB vs. A/C. I never saw that specific type of behavior and I was plugged into a power strip with surge protection or a UPS with surge protection at least some of the time. Do you get the same issue if you use a USB power source on a surge protector? Also, what hardware revision is your PR2000?

Has anyone attempted yet? Or had any luck yet? I just picked up this PR2000 because PureVPN claimed to support the default firmware. Once I unboxed, PureVPN changed their tune and no longer support Netgear. This is sad for me. I travel frequently for work and was looking forward to packing this instead of my Asus RT-N16 ... smaller footprint, and I only need 1 LAN port for my Roku.

please please please someone get OpenWRT working onboard this!!!

I wanted to ask times whether there is now a Openwrt release for this great TravelRouter or is in the works?
Seeking namely also a OpenWTR firmware for the "Netgear N300 Trek PR2000 Travel Router, Range Extender, Repeaterund Ethernet Bridge"

Thank you for your support.

Pauline
