Topic: Update on Linksys WRT1900AC support

The content of this topic has been archived between 16 Sep 2014 and 7 May 2018. Unfortunately there are posts – most likely complete pages – missing.

I've now an other problem.
After flashing OpenWRT I'm not able set up the router in a repeater mode. No SSID is broadcasting. I want to connect the router with an other AP but I want to have my own net with a different IP. So I'm able to connect to the AP but not able to create a virtual interface. Are there some important steps for this atheros device (WRT1900AC V1)?

Do you all have the Switch Tab under luci? I have a WRT1200AC and it's missing, adding it through ssh ends with a need of reset.
Thx!

so long

Marvell swore they will release a new revision of the WiFi driver soon, whatever they mean by "soon"... As a positive note, but not related to the WiFi driver, we might see a new revision of the mvneta driver in a couple of weeks time that will integrate one of the dedicated offload engines, namely BM (buffer manager) with PnC (Parser and Classifier) in the works but without a release date yet.

Lets hope that the promises are true. I think I'm a pretty patient person but I'm about a few weeks away from land filling all my Marvell based products.

I have a WRT1900AC V1 and the sad thing is that now we have V2 and ACS routers still being touted as Opensource ready. I'm not sure how they can still advertise that without a stable driver.

zhengy4 the good thing is that there are great alternatives. Pickup yourself up an Asus router and Merlin's Asuswrt. We have an RT-AC68U with Merlin's build and its been rock solid with 40+ devices connected to it. https://github.com/RMerl/asuswrt-merlin

Just look at the commit history of Merlin's build and you can see all the hard work going into it: https://github.com/RMerl/asuswrt-merlin/commits/master

While nerds are a small minority we do get to make the purchasing recommendations for friends, family, and work. If Marvell doesn't want to step up then they won't see another dollar from me. They won't be around much longer as the competition is just too good.

Thanks go out to the open source community who worked so hard to try and get this thing stable.

With all of the complaining going on lately about firmware and hardware, I want to go on record and say that my v1 router has been stable since Chadsters hard work.  I have had issues, yes, but 99% of them was due to my one configuration issues.

One thing I recommend, that caused issues for me, is DEFINITELY do not continue to just upgrade.  do a clean install once things start acting funny.

I am willing to provide any config/logs etc for any developer that wants to use my router as a case study to see if it will help pinpoint those that "aren't working"

THANK YOU DEVELOPERS for all of your hard work!!!!!

My findings on the random hanging of the router are that this is a thermal problem. I tried to keep the temps below 55C and it seems that the router is stable for a week now.

All of the lock-ups I've experienced, according to the logs, are cpu spinlocks. I believe the spinlocks are a symptom of problems in the wifi driver, and this is why >>>  This conclusion was reached because the router system logs seem to always point to 5Ghz Wifi being the cause of the spinlocks.

Also, I work with a old NASA engineer who used to work with hardware on Unix systems, and I've asked him the question about the router spinlocks. As he's very familiar with him, he said it sounds like a driver issue with wifi.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spinlock

Hope that helps.

In my particular case I'm with i.trankolov on the hanging issue.  My CPU temp begins to increase dramatically with no visible reason (no high data transfers, no high cpu-hogging process, etc) while DDR and WIFI temps remain stable.  The default setting for fan operation is checking every 5 minutes and what seem to me to be very high thresholds*.

I modified the fan script to kick in at lower temps, added an extra intermediate setting that kicks in well before the max setting, and set it to run every 30 seconds.  I still see the extra cpu increases but the peak temp is now never more than 70 deg and I haven't seen a hang since making these changes (roughly 2 weeks now).

It's interesting to me that others reporting temp measurements can be 15-20 deg cooler than I ever see.  Unless they are outdoors north of the arctic circle, there must be differences lot-to-lot that affect this.  Unless Belkin knows of the issue that's causing the CPU thermal rise and has fixed it in V2 and other fanless routers, I would personally be leery of buying those.

* regarding high thresholds - I recall that the high fan setting would be 100 or 105 deg C.  I don't know where the sensor is but if it isn't sensing the peak temp on the processor, then the processor temp will actually be higher than this.  The metal on a silicon IC will self-destruct in the short term around 125C.  And who knows, this might even be a source of a spin lock issue -- transistor switching speeds slow with heat and there may be timing issues introduced if the CPU gets too hot.

It really sounds as if there are two separate issues

1. temp related lockups (only seen by some people, probably because of different ambient temps and airflow differences in the router locations)

2. 5GHz wifi related lockups (only seen by some people, seems to correlate with Apple mobile devices)

problem 1 is fixable by altering the fan settings to run the fans more

problem 2 requires fixes to the driver.

I think both issues are related. Before I figured out that it is a thermal problem, the hangs I was getting, pointed me towards the driver. Now I think it is not the driver (only). If I leave the router to overheat (goes above 70C) it hangs with the following:

INFO: rcu_sched self-detected stall on CPU { 1}  (t=6001 jiffies g=23452 c=23451 q=104)
Task dump for CPU 1:
kworker/u4:1    R running      0    15      2 0x00000002

If I keep the temps below 60 it is very stable. Today I changed the FAN with a bigger one (50x50x10mm) and now it is cold and quiet (45C when doing nothing and no more than 58 when loaded). I will see what happens next and I will keep you posted.

It's entirely possible with the different 'batches' of 1900ac's out there, and I think it's what makes troubleshooting so frustrating to nail down. It's like herding rabbits; they just run all over.

Interesting that many say the lockups are due to overheating. I only ran OEM software for a few weeks, so I don't recall the fan's operation. Did OEM software lockup too?

I have ran three different versions of the OEM software and now using OpenWRT CC-rc3 and have had zero lockups ever.

With my device I was not observing lockups with OEM, it was rebooting itself at least once a day. I think, because of the integrated watchdog, which was initiating reboot when the device locks.

Has somebody successfully set up Repeater Mode?

regarding that link spinlock seems to be a kernel problem where waiting threads wait too much and maybe pile up waiting generating heat consuming resources

regarding heat.. you guys can test it easy.. put a hairdrier on the router and see the effects.. repeat several times for test of proof

v1 vs v2 stock is determined by the retailers, entirely dependent on how many hundreds/thousands of units they still have left of v1.  An analogy would be what occurred with Axe Kilo deodorant, where Axe stopped production on it over 5 years ago, yet it could still be found in major retailers until about a year ago due to the enormous stock that warehouses had built up.

4 years of global demand is very expensive to store.. ill say you check your local crock for counterfeited goods to see if he still fakes labels.. just saying

Because of these issues, we would currently recommend against purchasing this device until we have the missing pieces of software to make it functional with OpenWrt.

The Linksys press release claims that the device is "OpenWrt ready" and "Open Source ready". Given how much is still missing, and that not even the GPL code for this device was posted to the Linksys GPL code center, we consider these claims to be premature and unfortunately misleading.

my question is: why did you bought it??? considering you bought it knowing all the problems.. why do you complain???
ps: im lecturing your posts.. thx for the inside

It's been a little tiring listening to the constant complaining from one individual.

id say hes kind of right though regarding opensource ready.. merchandise.. nice trick/scam.. although he bought the product knowing the problems.. mind boggling big_smile

Does anyone here know how you can enable file sharing of USB-drive (via Samba) on the WRT1900AC with OpenWRT?

The OpenWRT Wiki instructs you to install samba from the 'repository' but there doesn't seem to be such a package. I would really like to use my WRT1900AC as a simple NAS and am unable to right now.

Any help will be appreciated

It's called luci-app-samba which will install samba36-server as a dependency.
You will also have to make sure you have the filesystem package installed kmod-fs-ext4....Ext4 is much better than ntfs on openwrt

Also, you probably need to replace Dropbear with OpenSSL...check back around page 305 https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php … &p=305

Transfer performance is mediocre compared to stock, but functional.

Also if you read back around page 305, i had all sorts of issues with reboots etc when i first set it up.
Amazingly since then i went 20 Days of Uptime until it spontaneously rebooted.

id suggest you open it up and apply some thermal paste if you can unscrew the heatsink (might be also glued to the chip - very hard to take it apart as it requires heating); make a hole; put a 12cm fan on it; hard link fan to 5V usb power wires

you seem to have 2 spare PCs to put router in the middle and transfer big files between them thus bringing the device to max it can deliver.. check temps check crashes.. linux script is not that different of windows script.. and OWRT is a really small linux distro..
also by now i would of bought a 30$ router..

https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php … 53#p278653
all laptops work idle ~ CPU 50C GPU 60+; ive seen laptop GPU go 90C; repaired a DELL laptop its a small 12" laptop CPU U2500 it consumes 9W but fan starts @69C.. and usual CPU temp is ~60C; all laptop heatpipes and gpuheatsinks burn.. cant keep hand on them
i consider CPU 50C and GPU 70C to be ok; ive seen worse.. newer ones most
i cant keep finger on atheros chip inside my router it burns within 3 seconds after i touch(plain chip no heatsink ~400mhz idle)

common http server session is 25min then your logged off by server not by forum; a good tactic is to copy all post before submitting or just using outside editor(also lots of adjustments after posting)

you bought usable Linksys fw. OWRT is the playground..

regarding any sort of monitoring you can do a cron job to start a script and split it at 5 seconds with a "sleep 5" command; there also seem to be various monitoring server packages.. SNMP or collectd

LMAO!

I'm just thinking.......... don't feed the troll..... wow, now he's been fed. lol

in fact we all trolling same post for a year and a half now but nonetheless we all hoping OWRT will work on the device too bad advertisement got so low quite straight on misleading or maybe you guys have bad units and have to return them; i wander if Linksys will accept return on the basis OWRT doesnt work on (some of??) them.. will be fun to see that

ps: ofcourse im trolling a little.. have read 20 pages to catch up on things big_smile

Here's the thing... As stable or unstable as OpenWrt is, it's still better than the crappy stock firmware that comes out of the box. Now that's saying something!

well it works if wired you can always disable radios and use another device for radios
i wander can you guys test if overheating does lock the router??
and if so can you say a relative value?
by blowing hot air from a hairdrier into it till reaching 80C(about 10C over temperature is sow you posting) to be sure heat isnt the problem? try keeping it sometime @80 while performance testing

you should be able to ssh> watch sensors
to see temps.. also should it be cpu or the virtual adapter(wifi core maybe??)

a pattern coud be found from

https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php … 89#p295489
gufus fanscript.. maybe set lower temps
