Take as reference the letters on the chip.
From what I see it's exactly the same.
On top of C13 there is a soldered pin that doesn't have any connection.
That is the first pin.  Grinding the package will expose another pin on the right side of that pin.
That's all wink.

Thanks for that. Nearly getting there, I can almost see the pins clearly enough to solder on them.
Interestingly, I had the weirdest issue just now. As I grind away, from time to time I would clean the dust, and power the router on, just to see if it starts loading OpenWRT from the blinking of the led on DS10. Well, at some point it didn't! It started just going into failsafe mode. I have pepe2k's uboot mod, so I re-flashed OpenWRT, and got the same result. Then, I flashed DD-WRT, and that booted perfectly! WTH? Flashed OpenWRT once more, and got the same failsafe result, but I switched the router off, and cleaned the pins again very carefully, and now the router boots OpenWRT normally again. Must have been a short somewhere. Ever seen this behavior?

Oh, also, weird log from that:

Sorry, I don't read wiki. My tplink wr740n v4.21 use CPU AR9331 have not USB pin.

This guide is applicable to your router. You need to grind  the CPU body a bit to be able to solder onto the USB pins

Can anyone help me to compile custom Attitude Adjustment 12.09 with USB packages for WR740N HW rev. 4.23?

I am using BuildRoot and I am trying to compile the image but everytime when i write the image i'm bricking my router and need to be reflashed via Serial console.
Simple i can't build a good image for my router. Does anyone have an Attitude Adjustment 12.09 image with usb mod in order to share with me?

Nice job done!

i upgrade your firmware, in kernel log it show.

[    0.570000] WARNING: at fs/sysfs/dir.c:530 0x8012f848()
[ 0.580000] sysfs: cannot create duplicate filename '/devices/platform/ehci-platform'
...
[ 0.860000] ath79: unable to register USB at 1b000000, err=-17

No idea abut that error. Maybe a trunk code bug?
I'm doing 12.09 and 14.07 stables firmwares right now.

Edit:  New firms added wink

Hello,
I updated my router (WR740N) from the original firmware to your latest firmware.
I also did the grinding and connect wires for the USB,from hardware point of view it should be ok. But if I check fdisk -l I cannot see connected usb pen.
Is it necessary to do some next steps?
Please could you give me step by step help? I am beginner with the linux.
Thank you in advance

Try this:
Reboot the router to have a clean state. Then access the router through telnet/ssh and put "logread  -f"
Now plug your usb drive and check what appears on the console. Copy that here

I tried it, but the log was clear. I will recheck the connection of the wires. I will give you my results..

Definitely, it's a problem on your mod.
I have tried the firmware right now, it worked well both in 12.09 and 14.07. I have a 740n v4.
I used a 32GB pen drive, formatted in FAT32.

Hello, a resistor is better to take  15Komhs 0,25watt or 0,5watt?

The real power over these resistors is 0.0007W.
Any will work. But the lesser power it is, the smaller it will be, easier to solder and cheaper.

Thank you for firmware!
USB works fine, but I can not install kmod-input-core, kmod-video-core, kmod-video-uvc.
Could you build firmware with USB and Webcams support  for 741nd v2?

P.S.: Sorry for my English smile

Hello,
I tested my router one more time.
I checked the soldering under the microsope, and everything looks ok. The problem looks on the chip side.
USB - osciloscope
On the image is capture of both signals D+ and D-.
D- is yellow, D+ is blue.
There is no signal on the D- . it should be invert of D+ with the same voltage level.
I am not sure, which version I flashed into the router (it was my first time). Is it some important difference between  sysupgrade and factory firmware?
Thank you for replay.

I re flashed the router through the openwrt LuCi firmware update by the 740n v4 factory firmware and I have still the same result. I measured it by the  oscilloscope again and the result is still same. Any ideas?

Sorry for the waiting! I've been very busy lately wink

That looks like a bad connection or soldering, check that they D+ and D- aren't touching nearby pins. Or maybe the pins are broken.
With the router powered off, put a multimeter in diode mode. Touch the + on the router's ground and the - on each USB data pin.
They should measure 400-600. If any of them doesn't measure that, it's a bad connection.

Ou yeah. It works. I changed the wires to the thicker one. And resolder them and now it works. Thank you for support.

But I cannot install samba server :-( Is it way, how to do it? I received message, that there is not enough free place.

Did somebody try to change the flash memory? For example by Spansion S25FL127S (16MB). Is it supported by the u-boot?
[EDIT] I installed exroot and now it seems works. But If I can change the internal flash it should be more cool and stable (nobody can remove the usb stick)
Thank you in advance

Easy! Now that you have USB, plug a hub and connect a flash drive on it.
Then store openwrt system on it! All space you want! smile

Edit: i didnt see you edit big_smile. It's nice then!
Yes , you can upgrade the flash anyway, I have tested myself with 8MB spansion and it worked well.

Here you can see someone tried with 16MB on a wr703, which is the same as the 741 v4, without the LAN switch

Doing it without programmer? Easy with the sandwich method, but you need good soldering skills :

Thanks for the links, I will check it and I hope, that I will try it :-) I already ordered spansion flash, we will see :-)

What read/write speed are you able achieved with external usb drive?

I tried to copy one movie to the usb hdd, but the speed was around 1MB/s. I expected faster transfer.
