The new wireless router supplied by one of the Electricity Company in Denmark that supply fiber optic connections in Denmark.
The previous router they supplied was p-2812-hnu-f1 ( https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?id=53511 )

cool! zyxel has used openwrt before, probably because qualcomm uses it as the basis for their SDK.

Based on the FCC internal photos, this is the first ath10k router I've seen with the AC chipset integrated onto the main PCB (as opposed to a mPCIe card, not that it matters much...)

(Last edited by drawz on 14 Nov 2014, 21:49)

Is it also 'open'? Can you install packages?

Do you look at the wireless driver used for 802.11ac ? is ath10k or some proprietary Atheros driver ?

i'm going to guess - probably not so open and probably a proprietary driver. this is probably straight from the Qualcomm SDK. The NBG6716 is similar in this regard, *I think*. It was AA based though, although I wonder if the latest update is also BB. The hardware is quite similar with the same OEM according to wikidevi.

Please note, I usually edit my replies:so this post may answer anything I have to say smile
- I like short threads and an  up to date wiki

Please also note, my main focus is to help get the p-2812 openwrt'ed, https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php … 9#p251459, so the nbg6616 will be made my main router so I am not tempted to use my time on it.
- I will probably receive another at some time.
However, I will probably telnet (!) into it to get information needed.

The device seems to be very new on the market, and with OpenWrt, I hope I have no problems with it "out of the box": my p-2812 interest with OpenWrt was because it had some problems "out-of-the-box"(solved with latter Zyxcel firmware) and now my interest in p-2812 is to ensure that the hardware that has taken resources from the planet, can be used/re-used by those who wish to (there seems to be a lot of them).

I find it interesting that Zyxel went OpenWrt: let us see how much propriety is in the box.

FYI:
- Open Source Request for source code sent to Zyxel: they are usually good at replying
- UART: I cannot find my voltmeter, but it is there, unmarked, with pins
- ftp://ftp.zyxel.dk/NBG6716/firmware/: grep -i openwrt V1.00\(AAKG.7\)C0.bin Binary file V1.00(AAKG.7)C0.bin matches

Edit
FYI:
- no vpn features per default: and I want this so at some stage, I will try and do something there

Edit:
FYI:
root@NBG6616:~# opkg update

I tried to files from dropbox folder but when I run make, I got following error:

svn: E155007: '/home/test/NBG6616_AARO1C0' is not a working copy

There is a some way to get open openwrt to NBG6616?

Any updates on vanilla OpenWrt on the Zyxel NBG6616?

What is this?
https://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots … pgrade.bin

I tried to upgrade to this firmware according to this article http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/zyxel/nbg6616 - # mtd -r write /tmp/firmware.bin /dev/mtd6
And now my router doesn't work. Only wifi is workind with OpenWRT ssid and I can telnet to it. Can't enter bootloader mode according to this article also.
How can I access the bootloader? Because this instruction doen't help:
"Configure your server to 192.168.1.33, netmask 255.255.255.0
Attach to one of the LAN ports
Copy your firmware file into the tftp directory and name it ras.bin (IE download it from zyxel directly)
Turn on device holding down WPS key
Keep holding WPS key until the firmware is downloaded and router is flashing
Power cycle device when LEDs flash."
Please, help!!!

They changed my router to a new one.
But still I don't understand how to flash to a clean Openwrt?

Same here. Also could not access the router after upgrade so mine was swapped for a new one as well.

I guess the firmware is not ready for use yet...

I have had contact with the developer and he told me that there was an issue till the 20th december that broke
the LAN ports of the device.

Everything seems to work mostly fine on his device so the firmware should work.
Main issue he seeing now is that the ath10k driver appears to be missing (no 5GHz wifi).

I have OpenWrt latest Designated Driver r49083 running on a Zyxel NBG6616, the ath10k is also installed. The 2.4GHz wireless works fine, but for the 5GHz WLAN the TX is very low: 6 MBit for all connected devices, no matter how far they are away from the router. The RX is fine. Also in the overview page of LuCI it only shows a Bitrate of 6MBit for the ac-wireless.

Is the ath10k driver not ready for use? is there anything I can do to improve the ac wireless?

thanks for your help!

Hi

The
"root@nbg6616:/tmp# wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/ … pgrade.bin -O firmware.bin
root@nbg6616:/tmp# mtd -r write /tmp/firmware.bin /dev/mtd6
Unlocking /dev/mtd6 ...
Writing from /tmp/firmware.bin to /dev/mtd6 ...
Rebooting ..."

Did not did the trick to me. It does it but it never comes up afterwards.

Fortunately the recovery works (I updated the wiki on that for people without patience like me)

Any hints on how to get OpenWrt on this device, besides this process?

Thanks a lot.

Hi,

I have exactly the same problem.
Yes, fortunately, the recovery procedure works.
I used jounin's tftpd64 and my PC's lan was configured on 192.168.1.33 (255.255.255.0).
I hope a new solution will be proposed to install openwrt on this router.

Thanks!

Hi,
One more with the same problem. By chance I found a forked older version (February 2016)  which does seem to work at:
https://repo.bologna.ninux.org/Bleeding … pgrade.bin

So something must have broken since then. Notice the size is about 5 MB whereas the current at both openwrt and lede-project is about 3.5 MB.

Since it is a fork of some kind I assume it doesn't just do the standard openwrt stuff, so I reverted back to the ZyXEL firmware using the recovery procedure.

I believe (but not entirely sure) that it has been broken since at least July 11, 2016.

"benzea" postet to the open ticket ( https://dev.openwrt.org/ticket/23123 ) the question if somebody has a serial console to post to help find out the issue with the NBG6616. Unfortunately I don't. Some else?

anybody had luck with the newer builds?

Hi. I followed the instructions on the wiki on how to install OpenWRT on the NBG6616 and I bricked it. I tried the recovery procedure for 4 days now, with different TFTP servers and configurations, and nothing worked. The router is sending exactly 0 packets to my PC when connected with the IP 192.168.1.33 / netmask 255.255.255.0 . (btw, I left the Default Gateway blank, is that correct?) I my main OS is Windows 10 (AU) and had no succes from it. I also tried from a live session of Ubuntu 16.xx , no succes. I cannot get the recovery via TFTP to work, can somebody better explain the steps taken, with a little bit more detail? Thank you!

Hi also had problems using tftp on windows 10. I finally managed by Mac OS X on my Macbook Pro:

Download PumpKIN (tftp client for Mac OS X). Under PumpKIN preferences set your path for the ras.bin file. And set "read request behavior" to "give all files"

On the Mac: On the network settings (TCP/IP) configure your IP to 192.168.1.33 and netmask 255.255.255.0. Gateway leave blank.
Attach to one of the LAN ports
Copy your firmware file into the tftp directory and name it ras.bin
Start PumpKIN
Turn on NBG6616 holding down WPS key
Keep holding WPS key until the firmware is downloaded and router is flashing <--- this was were I first failed, I didn't wait long enough until I power cycled, takes really long until the LEDs flag, hold WPS key until they flash!

Power cycle device when Power and USB2 LEDs flash. (It will take more than 5 minutes)

This is how it worked for me. Let me know if you succeeded!

I am not sure if the openwrt build is still broken for NBG6616. However the spin off project at lede-project.org has a working build in trunk.

That's good news, did you use the most recent LEDE build dated 25.09.2016? I didn't try flashing the NBG6616 since I bricked it a few times with the last OpenWRT Trunk builds. Then I would give the LEDE build a try (since the OpenWRT trunk still seems to be broken if I read Wooph's post above).

Sorry, posts 26 to 25 are missing from our archive.
