I'm trying to get the firmware of the 730re v2, however, there isn't any on tp-link web.
I have just flashed a WR841ND v8 with WA830RE v2 firmware, it works perfect.
Now, I am 99% sure that WR740N/741ND v4 is the same as WA730RE v2.
But as I have no firmware, I can't test it!

So, if you have that device, please take 3 minutes of your time and follow this for me
You only need to download tftpd32: http://tftpd32.jounin.net/

Connect to WA730RE by wireless or ethernet.
Open tftpd32.
Check the IP address shown on tftpd32, you will need it.

Open the browser and go to:

if it doesn't work, try directly with your WA730RE ip:

http://WA730RE_IP/userRpmNatDebugRpm265 … dline.html
You will see a diagnostic page like this:

Username: osteam
Password: 5up

Copy and paste this lines on command textbox:(replace 192.168.0.17 with the IP shown on tftpd32)
Click on SEND after each line. This can delay few seconds, wait for the "#" after sending the next command.

cat /dev/mtdblock1 > /tmp/mtd1;cat /dev/mtdblock2 > /tmp/mtd2

cd /tmp;tftp -p -l mtd1 192.168.0.17;tftp -p -l mtd2 192.168.0.17

Check the tftpd32 directory. Two new files should be there: mtd1 and mtd2. Those are kernel and rootfs.
mtd1 should be  1MB and mtd2 2,75MB.
Please, ZIP and upload to your preferred file host and post it there!

I cannot see the goal in flashing that fw in a router.. Can you explain??

Btw nice method to extract fw.. Even if i do not see the reason to cat to tmp before tftp!

Because 740n cost less than wa730, and i got a spare unit which I 'd like to use as repeater for a friend .
But openwrt is too complex for him, and I can't go to his house every time something breaks.
So I will flash the wa730 fw into it, the quick setup is extremely easy.

Usually doing tftp (or other file transfer related commands) directly with /dev/mtdblockx fails or send 0 bytes.
Don't ask me why, maybe block devices can't be treated as a file directly.
That's why I copy it to tmp (RAM)  and then transfer.

what i read is equivalent to the WR703N, read Coiler post here http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic. … ;start=120 file is there to flash it.

Its equivalent to the 740n, I think it should work by editing the firmware ID from the 740 to match the 730.
I'll do it , and if it works I'll post there

Your image is for 730re v1, and it is not compatible with ar9931 devices, it causes bootloop on the bootloader.
By the way, tplink published the firmware since I made this post!
I'll try 730re v1 on my older 740nv2, maybe it works!

740n  has 5 ports, 1 wan and 4 lan, wa730re v2 it's more likely wa701nd v2 or wr703n.

if you want to edit hw id in firmware image to be accepted by tp-link GUI you must use this:

You are right! I was wrong, I though that it had switch and wan port due its size.
Then its the same as the 703N!

Anyway, I flashed my 740n v4 with 730re v2 and worked
The 730re v2 firmware worked with any of the lan ports of the 740.
However I have not tried the wan

The wa730re V1 is the same hardware as the 740n v1/v2/v3 !
I have tested it and works!

porchietto, to install openwrt, you can download the stable release or the latest trunk:

Download the TPLINK HW ID Tool:
DOWNLOAD
Then open the program, and follow this image:

After that go to the router http interface / system tools / firmware upgrade and choose that file you have modified.
It will reboot and running openwrt!

I have the wa730re v2. Is it possible apply a similar setting to it? What are the values and the firmware versión in this case?

Hello dabyd64 i was flashing opentWrt file that you put it for V2 on TL-WA730RE it flashed successfully . and when connected it to pc by wire the ethernet get DHCP IP . and i open it by website 192.168.1.1 no response . but i ping 192.168.1.1 it ping successfuly is it bricked ? what can i do ? ?  i don't use the repeater yet hahahaha please help me.

if that image does no have LuCi you have to download it, do Firstlogin first http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/howto/firstlogin

Actually, you can use Barrier Breaker RC3:

Since this version it includes LuCI.
You can upgrade again using telnet.
