Topic: D-Link DSM-G600 Serial Console

I finally got a change to play around with the DSM-G600 again, and mapped out the serial console. The following diagram assumes the case open with the power to the left, and the status LEDs to the right. Serial console is 9600 8N1. Processor is a MPC8245 V1.2 PPC. 32M RAM, 4M FLASH. See posts in the general board for dmesg output, etc. The serial console is the white connector between the CPU and the battery which has a pinout parallel to the front LEDs.  Platform has raylink minipci and an ATA133 controller, as well as GigE and 2x USB2.0.

The U-Boot console itself is interactive, but the underlying OS is non interactive. See previous discussion about putting "fun_plug" in the default smb share, for getting semi interactive IO.

Some of the post output is due to having a 512M ext3 formatted thumb drive on there. (playing around with trying to get chroot to work within the existing config)

I see the picture of the IDE connector and chip on the previous DSM-G600 thread and I'm assuming it has only 1 connector on the board.  There's not one underneath the board or something is there?

Reading the marketing blurb on that chip at http://www.acard.com/english/fb01-produ … pe1_idno=1
seems to say it has 2 ide channels. The "Product Brief" link to a pdf on that same page shows 2 channels for sure

I'm sure it's too much to hope  it has 2 connectors actually soldered on though.. or am I wrong?

could you have the fun_plug start a getty on the serial input so that you can interactively login?

Also, from a cursory glance, this box seems somewhat similar to the buffalo linkstation HG/kuroboxHG. There's a very active developer community around the box (and there's even a from scratch gentoo install for it). If the hardware is indeed similar, maybe you could bootstrap their work?

I'm interested in this box as well. Almost all the NAS devices I've seen so far have .....disappointing speeds. Like around 1 MB/sec. So I really have to wonder if this thing can deliver? Can it reach even the potential of a 100 Mbit port much less the Gig-E?

This is dependant on the IO properties of the drive itself. Can you get 100Mb speeds streaming off a normal workstation with an IDE drive in it? With a single drive, it's going to suck. Some of the bigger NAS boxes that let you stripe across 4 disks, they're still going to suck because they're doing parity calculations in the embedded CPU. If you want real NAS, get a real NAS head. If you want a multifunctional embedded appliance with does some cifs/nfs NAS on top of other stuff, these boxes are ideal because the aren't going to hammer the USB bus which could be used for other stuff.

Ahem, I wasn't looking for serious hardware at BLAZING speeds, just wondering if this device tested out any better than previous devices.

Which so far haven't come anywhere near the speeds of the storage devices whether they be IDE or USB.

Just would be nice to know where it stands. DOG-SLOW, at least as fast as my USB flash-drive, or better?

On the stock RevB version, cifs to linux I get (completely unscientific) 3.170525388 MB/s Read and 2.4587656 MB/s Write, where 1 MB is defined as 1024KB. This could be samba on either end sucking.

In theory, yes, but getty was removed from the stock firmware's busybox for some reason.

Those are pretty decent numbers. Considering.

I guess you are not at the state yet though to test with FTP or NFS to take SMB out of the picture.

I don't have the leisure right now to embark on another project, but will keep an eye on this one looks interesting.

Same here. I'm just using the thing with stock firmware until I finish up about 6 other projects. Then I'm going to have a look at the kuro/gentoo install. U-boot is going to be problematic unless we find someone who knows it. Dlink didn't produce source for their implementation. I put in an email to their support desk about it, but have yet to hear back.

So on ftp.. reads are 6.81MB/s and writes are 4.67MB/s. Not too shabby. Not stellar, but who knows. Maybe mbm can bench the revA.

The rates under Samba seem typical.

I just ran some similar tests with an WRTSL54GS, using both USB 2.0 flash and a Seagate Barracuda-IV drive got same results of about 2.7 megs/sec. So all these embedded devices seem to cap out around the same range, likely CPU-limited on the Samba side.

It will be interesting to see if Samba-4 embedded will wring some more performance out of the little boxes.

Any updates in regards to DSM-G600 performance testing using the 1.01 Firmware dated 06-01-31?

How about the ability to get this v1.01 firmware to boot from the device's internal drive?

Please dont flame me for posting here. I have this device and really like it. I have looked for other resources for modifing the device but have not found any others.  I am willing to put in the time and learn how to mod this thing but wondered if a guru or two could answer a few questions for me before I jump into the deep end.

I am using this device in a non traditional application. In my car. I have a few friends that would liketo do the same. What I want to do is make a few changes to the device. Such as enable/add dchp, make the wifi come on as a default not have to use the cat5 jack to set it up, make the wifi load faster, and remove any unnecessary stuff that causes it to load slower. I would also love to get access to the built in web browser.

If any of this can be done I would love a shout and any tips/pointers in the right direction.

You can do all of that by playing with "fun_plug" scripts. "fun_plug" is more or less an rc.local.

Can Some one post some info on how to get started doing this?

Ok here is the deal. I tried to play with this a bit and I now beleive that I am in way over my head. I looked quite a bit for information about your reference and I have come to the conclusion. Im not that smart! I have an offer to paypal someone if they can change the "fun_plug" script for me and tell me how in detail to install it.  The things I would like are to enable wifi by default so if the thing crashes or the power is pulled wifi will always boot. I would love to have a dhcp server installed and give devices that conect to it an ip address. If there is a way to have it boot faster that would be cool.  Please let me know if you are interested and what compensation you would require.

Any ideas if you can turn the DSM-G600 into a USB print server? Also, would anybody share any of their fun_plug files? I just want to see what kind of cool things people are doing with this cool little box.  Thank you.

I got a serial console working on a revision b dsm-g600, and I have a few notes:
the configuration of the serial header (same position) is, from the cpu to the battery, +3.3v, tx, rx, gnd
perhaps I just misunderstood what you meant in your diagram, but it's definitely trasmitting data on the second pin
there is a shell running on the serial console, but it's not setup properly.. no commands work, but pressing ctrl+c causes it to respawn

hopefully someone will come out with a working custom firmware / build environment soon smile

note for the hence to be more lucky then I:
the serial upload option in u-boot automatically replaces the current kernel image in flash
there is a tool that comes with u-boot source distrib to make images
the original firmware is not a valid image (checked with image program, not upload, as upload over 9600bps serial would take >1 hour)

there is a tool that comes with u-boot source distrib to make images
the original firmware is not a valid image (checked with image program, not upload, as upload over 9600bps serial would take >1 hour)

Nice work. I'm not going to have a chance to play with mine for a month or so. Good luck. If you can get a working kernel into U-Boot it would rock, because from there everything else should theoretically be easy. Updating U-Boot itself to support netbooting would be majorly helpful. It looks like the box is a standard motorola sandpoint dev platform. The Kuro-box/linkstation guys can probably help if you need pointers. Good luck.
