Topic: usb hub on wr703n not working why?

Hi,
I have a working usb-web-cam on my wr70n (OpenWrt) and now for adding a usb sound card.

For this I must use a usb hub, but when I connect my (healthy) hub and connect the camera, mjpg_streamer fails.

I get ls from /dev and I have /dev/video0 there, but when run the command of mjpg_streamer it fails, while if I do all without the hub connected, it works.

What could be the reason please?

Re: usb hub on wr703n not working why?

I continue doing tests to somehow figure out what the problem is...

I hope it is from camera as if hub will not work error free, I can not connect various devices I want

Here I connected the hub again and commanded mjpg_streamer to start without -y mode:

mjpg_streamer -i "input_uvc.so -d /dev/video0 -f 15 -r 176x144" -o "output_http.so -p 8082 -w /www/webcam"

if I use -y, I get a fail immediately and no error report. In case of above command, It seems that it starts (after all it sees the webcam on /dev/video0), but it stops saying:
"no space left on the device".

If I connect camera without hub, then the same command works with no complain about the space.

I used 2 different hubs, also I connected same camera via hub to windows xp and I have it recognized (both camera and its internal audio microphone / sound card as USB 2.0). Next I tested and camera-via-hub in windows xp is working properly, then why shouldn't it work on my wr703n with openwrt?!

post the output of

Thank you for helping,

out put of "opkg list-installed kmod-usb*":

root@OpenWrt:/# opkg list-installed kmod-usb*
kmod-usb-core - 3.3.8-1
kmod-usb-ohci - 3.3.8-1
kmod-usb2 - 3.3.8-1

May be helpful so I get more help:
1. my camera works ok if directly connected to usb port of wr703n, running mjpg_streamer
2. stops working even though still listed as /dev/video0, if connected via usb hub
3. it works ok if connected by the same usb hub to my pc (on windows xp)
4. mjpg_streamer with -y parameter fails just in start (when camera on usb hub)
5. mjpg_streamer without -y parameter will not give fail message but a "not enough space" (when camera on usb hub)

Re: usb hub on wr703n not working why?

Is this hub a "high speed" hub as reported in dmesg?  Some usb devices fail when used in conjunction with wireless on the 703n.  This is known to happen with serial devices--don't know specifically about webcams.

Re: usb hub on wr703n not working why?

You say it works without the hub: for how long, and is WiFi enabled?
Is the hub powered or passive?
As lizby says, is it reported as high speed or full speed in dmesg?

Re: usb hub on wr703n not working why?

What camera do you use? (Maker/Model)

DIR-505 A1 + AA12.09 + 1wire stuff + ws2300 + DSLR + 16 USB webcams

Re: usb hub on wr703n not working why?

Thank you everybody for help, it is very important for me to solve this hub problem, for my project...

well I made an screen shot of dmesg so you could see by yourself:
http://i40.tinypic.com/hv4b9h.png

Yes, the camera works for long and wifi is enabled. If without a hub, now I can use it fully as IP camera and I also log in via internet anywhere and all works fine. Problems starts just when I add the hub in the middle. Same time it is crucial to have the hub because I also need to add a hard drive here to expand my OpenWrt.

Also, I tried both with powered hub and without: same results :-(

I got the camera from Ebay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-WEBCAM-Came … 2c567461ff

if the link is dead, simply searching 'uvc webcam' will give the result, it is ~20$ web cam. It's new and I've tested it various ways. It's always giving good results only mjpg_streamer fails!

Could you please suggest a way I could take a snapshot without using mjpg_streamer from this /dev/video0?

I think may be it is mjpg_streamer having some problem?

Re: usb hub on wr703n not working why?

"full speed" hub, not "high speed"--that could be your problem.

well, I have 2 hubs, on both of them it was written "high speed" when I bought. Also, one of them is the multi wires hub that I found on this forum used for wr703 hub mod.

now, is there any way I could be sure I am buying a new 'high speed' hub other than what is written on them by the seller?

these are hubs I bought on ebay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/MINI-4-Port-USB … 1e7c6d4fe6

http://www.ebay.com/itm/High-Speed-USB- … 20cfa08150

Edit
1. I attached a 3D usb sound card, also detected as 'full-speed', only camera says 'high-speed'
2. uninstalled mjpg_streamer and ran "fswebcam -v -r 160x120  /tmp/slika.jpg", same results: if no hub, the image is properly saved as what it should be, if hub in the middle, then I get a "no space left on the device".

The problem is now I don't know how I could buy a usb hub which is truly high-speed !
Any new suggestion please? I really need to have a hub equipped linux box

Re: usb hub on wr703n not working why?

No real advice, just guessing:
- Invest a bit more than $1,80 for a USB hub
- Get a branded hub (dlink, sitecom, ...)

DIR-505 A1 + AA12.09 + 1wire stuff + ws2300 + DSLR + 16 USB webcams

Thanks I'd do it to prove me what is the real problem, but 15$ for the hub makes the initial project goal of 'cheapest' moving IP webcam (on servo motors) unreal :-)

Re: usb hub on wr703n not working why?

I installed kmod for audio and madplay, soundCard<-->cheap-hub<-->wr703n

Worked fine!

Then may be the camera is not the right one? Does this say anything useful please?

Re: usb hub on wr703n not working why?

The hub problem has not seemed to appear for audio on the 703n.

I don't know of any way to determine that a usb hub advertised as "high speed" on ebay actually is.  I've bought a half dozen--3 were high speed and the other three I got a refund on as "not as advertised".

I've had luck with the octopus types:  http://www.ebay.ca/itm/4-Port-Octopus-M … 53e5264e1d

I believe Tomtop was the seller, but no guarantees.

Re: usb hub on wr703n not working why?

i had luck with this kind of usb hub:

http://www.miniinthebox.com/hi-speed-3-port-usb-2-0-hub-with-chip-ic_p377080.html

it almost fits in size on the side of wr703n and it's high speed:

works ok with extroot on 16gb stick + uvc webcam wink

Re: usb hub on wr703n not working why?

Thank you all! New hope for me that by getting 2 new hubs (Lizby and Nebbia88 suggestions) at least one will work (or even 3 will work big_smile)

I was going for USB/IP project, implementing MCU+Enc28J60 board and add my flash USB there and communicate over Ethernet!
http://usbip.sourceforge.net/

Imagine how your great help eases my life big_smile

Thank you again and I go order on ebay smile

Re: usb hub on wr703n not working why?

i have to add an important note, i cannot recommend that site (never ordered anything), i only used it's page as an example image!
