I've setup my router as a repeater based on the simple steps here.

Using: MODE 2 REPEATER, DIFFERENT NETWORK

Is it possible to setup a PPTP VPN connection on top of this?

I'm on a TP-Link MR3040 (http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/tp-link/tl-mr3040) with "OpenWrt Attitude Adjustment 12.09-rc1 / LuCI 0.11 Branch (0.11+svn9425)"

Simply installing and configuring kmod-pptp and ppp-mod-pptp doesn't seem to work.

would you be so kind as to share your config/setting files (wireless, network, firewall, dhcp etc) seeing that you were able to successfully setup yourrouter as a repeater based on the steps here -
