Topic: Zyxel NBG-5715 is running OpenWRT ?!?

The content of this topic has been archived on 25 Apr 2018. There are no obvious gaps in this topic, but there may still be some posts missing at the end.

Hi forum...

I have collected information on this Zyxel Router, in the hope that OpenWRT will try to support it...8) 8)

When i tried to telnet to the router i discovered that the NBG-5715 is actually running OpenWRT,
so i thought that it might just be possible to run a new version of OpenWRT on it as well somehow  :?:  :?:
The OpenWRT that the router is running now, is a version 6.01 (the router say) but it is with a Zyxel-adapted LUCI web-interface on top...!?!

I have now collected a lot of informations on this router...
If more is needed, i will try to answer...

The FCC ID is I88NBG5715

I found internal pictures:
https://apps.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&calledFromFrame=Y&application_id=193009&fcc_id='I88NBG5715'

I also found the sources for OpenWRT inside the router...
ftp://opensource.zyxel.com/NBG5715/

The Router say:

It looks like it isn't supported yet, however a device has been donated to the project so support for it might appear sooner or later.

That sounds really great...

I am proberbly a total noob when asking this:
If the router is not supported, then how can it run OpenWRT allready ??

What CPU is in there?

cat /proc/cpuinfo

Due to vendor patches. Supported in this context means that unmodified OpenWrt sources can be compiled and run on the device.

What is currently a status of this device? Will it be supported by community OpenWRT soon?

I am new to OpenWRT, but I am a programmer myself. I have the device and I am willing to experiment with it, no problem compiling OpenWRT from the sources.

On wiki, there is:

>> The Zyxel NBG5715 is currently not supported due to the lack of sourcecode for the Mindspeed CPU.

What can I do to help?

Get the GPL source from the manufacturer. They're obligated to release it. If I take a linux kernel and modify it to add support for my chip, I MUST release the source code. Some manufacturers think they're exempt from this, and they can go die in a fire.

Datasheets for the chips would be ideal, but next to impossible without NDA.

I have communicated with the manufacturer and the firmware source code should be avaiable in the second part of May. I will forward it to the OpenWRT community.

No problem! I think It could be great device with the OpenWRT, much better than with the stock firmware. Fast CPU, lot of RAM, two USB ports...

I would like to experiment with the device, when the firmware will be avaiable, any ideas what kind of cable is needed to connect it with the PC to directly write firmware? I am quite new to this. I see no connector, so I think I would have to solder some serial to usb cable?

I have the sources!

Hi exander,
care to share them?

maclaudi wrote:

The link for the sources were publicly sent to openwrt dev mailing list.

(Last edited by exander on 10 May 2012, 23:39)

The sources are for two old kernels (2.6.21.1 and 2.6.33.5), also the structure of the sources looks like older OpenWRT releases. I'm a developer but at the moment I don't have that much time to look into porting those sources to the newer kernels supported by current releases of OpenWRT, although, with the comcerto1000 sources porting it should not be too hard.

Is any OpenWRT developer willing to look into this? I can confirm that the sources available to compile and build the latest (i.e. NBG5715_1.00(AAAG.2) firmware for the router, although with quite old (~2 years?) OpenWRT related tools...

Best,

-C

I would very much like to have community OpenWRT for this device, I would like to donate 25$ to support this cause, it is not much, but it is something. Maybe other owner of this device will join me.

(Last edited by exander on 10 May 2012, 21:06)

Donating hardware IMO would be a better contribution. I'm not sure which dev would be interested in this platform. Maybe ask on IRC?

As far as I know ZyXel donated a model of this router to the openwrt project...

Like maclaudi said, the device has alredy been donated to the OpenWRT.

I don't know if this will help or not. However, a recent update to Marvell Kirkwood with linux-3.3.5 has an entry support for a ZyXEL NSA-310 board as shown below:

I don't know if this will help or not. However, a recent update to Marvell Kirkwood with linux-3.3.5 has an entry support for a ZyXEL NSA-310 board as shown below:

Has there been any progress on getting OpenWRT on the Zyxel NBG5715? I've checked the wiki and it says there hasn't been a source for it but it looks like someone on the forum sent it to the mailing list.

I am also wondering if there has been any progress on this. Exander sent the sources on May 6th of 2012. I am assuming that Devs are focusing on hardware that has a large user base, which makes sense. If there is any status update on this please let us know.

Thank you in advance,
Ryan

I'm guessing that OpenWRT development for the NBG5715 never really went anywhere?  It's a shame because I really like this router for the most part; it's nice and fast with pretty good hardware but the stock Zyxel firmware leaves a lot to be desired.  The thing was freezing for me for a good while when I first bought it until Zyxel finally released an updated firmware.
