I plan to upgrade my Asus WL500gp Broadcom card with something better and more compatible.

Looking at some of the Atheros cards I wonder if the TL-WN861N card works well (or at all) with recent OpenWrt builds?!

I got that card and did everything as the tutorials told me to do. Everything seemed fine, but when I want it to scan the area for other bssids i get this:

root@OpenWrt:~# iwlist wlan0 scan
wlan0     Interface doesn't support scanning : Operation not supported

wlan0 is the "master interface", you need to spawn a monitor-interface
