Topic: help bricked wr741nd

The content of this topic has been archived between 9 Apr 2018 and 27 Apr 2018. There are no obvious gaps in this topic, but there may still be some posts missing at the end.

hi,

[edit...]

I have flashed a wr741ndV1 with backfire factory image and all worked perfect.

Because there was not enough space for openvpn I have made a customized image with image builder ar71xx (10.03).

The Image build fine without failure and I flashed the sysupgrade image for wr741ndv1 with the Luci Interface of backfire 10.03.

Bootup looks normal and sys was first blinking and than steady but I could not connect to the router.
I have tried failsave mode with the QSS Button and sys was blinking constantly fast but as well no connection to the router.

As far as I could find in the forum the recovery over serial console is the only way.
Although I use openwrt many years I never got the dilemma to use the serial console.

I am pretty new to the serial topic and have of course read what I could find at the wiki and in the forum but
I would really need a little help because I could not find to much about the wr741nd.

I assume that some geeks already has experience with the wr741nd serial console and could tell me the pin layout
of the SJ1 connector.

Also I have read that the TTL Signal could be 3,3 Volt is that right ?

As level shifter I have ordered the Nokia CA-42 USB cable and I hope that it will work for this device.

It would be very helpful and nice if somebody could give me a helping hand.
...

thx a lot

tom

hi,

shame on me it seems that I didn´t search enough :-(

but fortunately found the info now on topic https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?id=22045

I have tried to solder a 4 pin head but could not get the solder out of GND.
It seems that GND has no hole. ???

I will now solder a wire directly and test the nokia CA-42 cable which hopefully will work.

thx
tom

I will compare the output looking for any differences to figure out why network did not work anymore with customized image from build image

May be someone has a hint

hi

I have build now a new image with image builder from 10.03 ar7xx just with default settings.

Image build without error but still same problem
The router do not have an network connection.

Do I something wrong or could this be a problem with the image builder ?

thx
tom

hi

have built now 10.03 with build system from svn (build system was ubuntu 10.04)
which work so far so maybe the problem is really the image builder.

maybe someone responsible for the build system could sort this out.

thx
tom

Just in case someone will revert back to tp-link firmware here is how i did it (without garantie and liability)

www.tp-link.com download TL-WR741ND_V1_100312 (this is a up firmware without u-boot, so nothing has to be stripped)

unzip the firmware and rename the *.bin file to original.bin

upload the firmware to /tmp

ssh to router
and do a

mtd -e firmware write original.bin firmware -r

cross your fingers and hopefully the router is available at
192.168.1.1

tom

and

Hi!
I tried to come back to original firmware (TL-WR741ND), but after that I cannot access web interface. When I access 192.168.1.1 it searches for LUA interface. :-(
Are there some way to access TP-Link config?
What do you recommend? Should I make a serial cable? How can I make this cable?

Are there some way to access TP-Link config?

Clear your browser cache.

Thank you!!! It works!

I have the same problem and after installing the module for WiFi, I can not connect at all with the router. I tried also with the level of failsafe but it's not possible. Can any of you write what should be done to connect to the RS232C. Please help.

Yeah, failsafe doesn't work for the wr741nd for some reason, even though ifconfig shows that the network interface is up. It can't even ping itself in failsafe mode.

What mean this charsets ?

I bricked a Wr741nd today and brought it back - the only firmware that works is the 10.0.3.1 RC3, anything else fails after you change the router IP address. I have also managed OpenVPN, installing the Luci openVPN package seemed to install it when the actual package failed. Anyway, here's how I brought it back:

1. restart router, when Sys light comes on, hold front reset/QSS button for 3 seconds until SYS light starts flashing very quickly.
2. at this point connect computer directly to port 1 on router.
3. give computer static ip of 192.168.1.155.
4. restart networking on computer.
5. run: telnet 192.168.1.1 -l root
Run ‘firstboot’
Run ’sync’
Run ‘passwd’ to reset root password.
Fix computer networking and restart the router.

Then scp will work or ssh - I used winscp to make it easy, drag and drop:

•Login as root via ssh or use winscp
•Check memory usage with the free or top commands; the image can be up to 8MB, so only proceed if you have as much free RAM as the image size plus 6-8MB - I had no problem after:
•An easy way to free up some RAM is to delete the symlinks to /etc/modules.d/20-mac80211 and /etc/modules.d/27-ath9k and reboot. Drop caches can be useful too:
root@OpenWrt:/# echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches

•wget or scp (easy drag and drop with winscp) the new firmware build to /tmp
•And finally, using the winscp command box:

root@OpenWrt:/# mtd -r write /tmp/openwrt-ar71xx-tl-wr741nd-v1-squashfs-factory.bin firmware

The factory firmware seems to work better, use RC3 only - earlier had no wifi, trunk failed completely, sysupgrades had problems or missing items. None of them have anything other than wifi 1-11 (12-14 won't work).

JTAG it :-)

thnx.for reply i relealised my typo, bout 15 mins later.got it recovered to original firmware smile

Hi! Help me plz, i bricked my 741ND v1.3.
How? I just mount /dev/mtdbloks[2-4] as jffs2 filesystem and tried to create some files, after reboot the router is brick smile

After turn on, the power led is lighting, and sys LED with qss led is flashing once at 3-4 seconds. :-(((
Help plz.
Maybe JTAG it, but I don't know how.. I can't found any instruction anywhere.

Hi,
I got to my hands bricked WR741 v4.3. It went wrong when upgrading stock firmware. I read a lot in wiki and forum and just want to make some thinks 100 % sure.

I will solder (already started but my soldering iron broke before finish) headers to pins according to info in wiki.
I ordered before (but newer use so far) this USB<->TTL convertor http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi … OC:US:3160 To be sure if I will connect it GND-GND, VCC-3,3, TX-RX, RX-TX (or RX,TX switched) won't I burn the serial circuit? Does anyone any experience with this convenrter?

Will use TFTP recovery and assume I should use *-factory.bin image (device never flashed with non stock firmware). Is it right?

What is general difference between *-factory.bin and *-sysupgrade.bin images?

Thanks for answers

do not connect VCC or 3.3v!!
adapter and router must have its own power..

serial only need gnd tx rx..

use factory image, it's bigger wink

After failed installation my router ain't working properly.

WLAN not working,
I can't acces to Web-confing

So, it become as usual Switch.

In pinging it responds when I ping 192.168.1.1

Any ideas, how to revert to stock firmare?
