What are the symptoms of "wireless go out" for you?

The only problem I've seen in a month of operation is ONE "kernel oops" related to hostapd (this was after about a week of uptime). The kernel oops took down the hostapd process but left the router running, which meant that although the SSID beacons were still visible to clients, and wired connections worked OK, it became impossible for clients to associate to a WLAN. I didn't have the symbols for that kernel, so unfortunately, I wasn't able to trace the oops back to the source.

The only other uptime-related issue I've seen is my memory usage seems to gradually grow over time, and I haven't been able to easily track it down to any one process. Running "free" just after a warm boot showed 42 megs used, but after six days, I was seeing it at 58 megs used. Your numbers will vary based on what you have installed, and mind you, I have a lot of stuff running on the box. This could easily be caused by one of the userspace packages I have installed, so it's not clearly a WNDR3700 problem.

Once this happens, do you see (when logging in on a wired port) if both hostapd processes are still running? Do you have syslog enabled, and if so, does that show anything?

To enable syslog, for example, in /etc/config/system:

Or if you don't have syslog turned on, how about dmesg output?

I will set this up and check the next time it happens.

OK, so there's bits and pieces of this info about people using Backfire, but its spread throughout the thread and I'd like to get an updated and clearer discussion.  Who out there is using Backfire (especiallly the final release,) and what have your results been?

What package are you using, (maybe a link the list elsewhere if it's long.)  What's working well, what are you having problems with?

Me personally, I installed Backfire final from the OpenWRT supplied binary and (pretty much as expected,) I am missing a lot of critical packages, so many things don't work (including wireless.)  But I think I'm starting to get it worked out.   I have only installed handful of packages on top of what comes with the image, but I'll update with another post when/if I seem to get everything to a stable and happily usable point.

I also use backfire 10.03

Wireless dont work without some packages ( wpad, kmod-ath9k ) & file modification /etc/config/wireless

I can not understand, why this is not improved in latest release...

In LUCI, I miss  log, wol, schedule, block services function & so on.


Is it posible, that somebody create this release with all latest patches ???

I’ve compiled openwrt from svn today and installed it on my WNDR3700 because I’ve had enough of the stock firmware. I haven’t used openwrt before but everything worked quite fine.

My only compliant is the abysmal wireless performance compared to the stock firmware. OpenWRT gives me transfer speeds of 500-1000 KB/s where the stock firmware did up to 8500 KB/s and more.
I recompiled using the patch from bug #6533 and played with the antenna settings.

After testing 0x0 to 0xf with iperf, I’ve found that 0x9 seems to work best for me (4300-5000 KB/s) although it is still far from matching the performance of netgear’s firmware.

//edit: I should mention that I’m only using the 2.4 Ghz band and always had the second radio disabled.

Some time ago i did similar tests for 5Ghz band and results were same. 0x9 was a little bit better than the other values.
So maybe they both should be 0x9 ...

Here is the log. It looks like it keeps disconnecting me due to inactivity, but in milliseconds or something. It starts doing this about once a week and doesn't stop until I reboot. I'm able to authenticate, ssh in, and even read the logs before I got kicked again.

I've been trying to get Backfire 10.03 running on an WNDR3700. The installation is fine but I can't get WiFi working. The hardware seems OK since I've tested it with the Netgear firmware.

I've tried both the ath5k driver and the madwifi driver without success. MADWIFI seems to be a little better (see dmesg output below).

Here are my setup/configuration and some diagnostic output from wifi and dmesg.

I've tried every combination and I've read through the forum messages as well as http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/uci/wireless and http://kamikaze.openwrt.org/docs/openwr … 120001.2.2. My suspicion is that I'm missing a package that should be listed as a dependency for what I'm installing.

Some of your wireless options is for madwifi, not for ath9k.

Specs say the 9220 is 2.4/5GHz, but I haven't been able to get that radio working on 2.4GHz. If I select a non-5Hz channel hostapd complains saying that the radio doesn't support it. Any ideas?

Wouldn't be an issue if my WLAN adapter saw APs on 5GHz. It should... it's a Ralink 3070 chipset.

There is an Atheros AR9223 which is a 2.4GHz radio, and an Atheros AR9220 with is (according to Atheros) a 2.4GHz/5GHz radio.

According to the specifications, the 9220 should be able to run on 2.4GHz.

This is the SquashFS image I build on april the 14th (straight from the newest branche. smile ), I just couldn't get port forwarding to work, everything else (Wifi 2,4 and 5GHz, WAN, LAN, USB, NAT, Samba, etc...) is working fine.
