Topic: Improve the Wiki Table of Hardware?

The content of this topic has been archived between 12 Sep 2015 and 6 May 2018. Unfortunately there are posts – most likely complete pages – missing.

@zo0ok:

As for me, I'm concentrating on b) and c).

Regarding b) ToH (Data Entries):
I have filled the Wikidevi URLs quite good, and forum URLs as a start.
Some postings ago, we recognized: Yes, there's still some work to do.

What's missing in the dataentries?
- Availability=¿ (667 devices)
- ....

What toh views are missing / requested (e.g. the "available" view)?
- datatable containing columns xyz, filtered for a,b,abc
- ...

Regarding c) Device Pages
I agree, the template_device needs to be updated,  the sooner the better.
Please make use of the datatables and datatemplatetables as appropriate.
Examples for filtering for the right brand/model/version are available on the template_device.
In case of questions: Just ask here in the forum.

Agree.

@zo0ok: Check the filtering. Hope it's correct now. (forgot that link in my previous posting).

Quick & dirty workaround: copy & paste the complete link, instead of just clicking on it.
Of course, using the code tags makes it obvious and less error prone smile

About that Alcatel SBell
I just found this page:
http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/hwdata/alca … _rg100a-aa
as an addition to http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/alcatel-sbell/rg100a-aa

- Go to http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/views/toh_minimal_all
- Chose a device, any will do
- Click on the link in the Device Page column
- Click on the link View/Edit data

You see: What you describe above is the case for many devices.

Maybe I didn't get you point, though.

O my mistake, I didn't realise that already came out of your database.

This TOH is great!

Tomorrow i'll try to join in.

During import/export I set all devices with <=16 MB RAM or <=4 MB Flash to Discontinued. So if you can
1) show available, AND
2) show ¿, where !32=ram and !4=flash, I think you might get what you want.

1) availability=available (ram/flash doesn't matter)
2) availability=¿ and RAM!=8,16,32 and Flash!=1,2,4

Did I translate you request correctly?

I mean, I just presumed that all devices with <=16MB RAM or <4MB flash were discontinued... so I set the Available field like that. It could be wrong, but in the vast majority of cases it should be true.

I think it was more of a helpful suggestion, rather than a request, I came with smile

I think it looks good... I look at the filters, and perhaps this is unnecessary:

filter     : Flash MB!=¿
filter     : RAM MB!=¿

In conclusion, we have 350 possibly relevant devices, and 600 legacy or unsupportable (15.05 and on) devices.

I think these 350 devices is where we should put the effort. Although, I guess it could be possible to narrow down 350 to even fewer relevant devices, but I don't know how now.

Done, and ported to http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/views/toh_available_864

-> Update Availability -> less relevant devices.

I added "Unsupported" to this table: http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/views/toh_available_864
Maybe that makes it easier to filter out more devices.

BTW: Now also "Supported Current Rel" shows values.
(Root cause: Simple typo. "Rev" i/o "Rel")
D'oh!

Got it down to 145 by filtering for Supported Current Rel!=''.

google for: "openwrt EA6100" -> first hit.

Google is already aware of the new Table of Hardware.
Good choice, to add the "Techdata" to the pagetitle.

Nice smile

Made my first entry to toh

http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/hwdata/nexx/nexx_wt3020f

OEM homepage URL does not seem to work although the URL is the correct one

picture URL also does not work I'm not sure how to make the correct link.

Power supply,  (I now use a 500mA cellphone charger)
Could this be improved?

Reccomender Power supply: 5V 1A (to provide enough power to the USB)
Power consumption: ~350mA (WT3020 without USB peripherals)

Is the rest OK?

BTW my first attempt I made a mistake And used EXAMPLE as brand.  that entry can be deleted

The NEXX was not in the list when i started.  Or at least i did not find it...

My apologies

http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/hwdata/nexx/nexx_wt3020f <=  That's my entry BTW

Just now i searched again, and i find all NEXX devices listed...  Can it be that someone was VERY fast and added all of them wile I was busy adding just one??     O well, delete my entry..   I'll try not to make the same mistake again. Maybe it's better when I add details to devices that already exist in the toh to avoid clashes?

@tmo26: You also pointed to http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/views/toh_available_864 and of course, the main ToH is http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/start

I don't understand which of these you prefer, or why you prefer any of those to http://wiki.openwrt.org/playground/toh/top_note - which offers a summary of what the page is about, a request for people to help update the ToH, and a condensed table of variations with all the same links.

Would you explain what you'd like to see at the top of the ToH?

(Last edited by richbhanover on 10 Sep 2015, 03:49)

Do we really need all those "All / Supported / Unsupported / WIP" for each and every user?
Would it be sufficient, if we keep only the "All", with minimal, standard and extended versions?

frietpan wrote:

Filters set incorrectly? Forgot there's still another filter active?

Nope, the original WT3020 entry is dated 27/08/2015, the date of zo0oks export.

O well, delete my entry..   I'll try not to make the same mistake again. Maybe it's better when I add details to devices that already exist in the toh to avoid clashes?

I noticed that you set "WLAN Hardware: MediaTek RT5390 (SoC)".
Looking at

http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/views/toh_extended_all?dataflt[Platform*~]=7620

, the WT3020 you added is the only one with RT5390, all others have MT7620. Furthermore, the pictures on http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/nexx/wt3020 shown only the MT7620N, no extra WLAN chip -> WLAN Hardware can't be RT5390 (SoC), but must be MT7620 (SoC).

I now see where you got this information from: It's on the devicepage.
http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/nexx/wt3020 … re_details

Must also be wrong, since SoC = MT7620, and this SoC already has ETH, Switch, Wifi integrated:
Ethernet chip: MediaTek MT7530 (SoC)
Ethernet switch: MediaTek MT7530 (integrated)

(see also https://wikidevi.com/wiki/MediaTek -> MT7620 has everything on board)
Also interesting: https://wikidevi.com/wiki/MediaTek_MT7620

You see, it's tricky to provide accurate information.

The good thing of your edit: I noticed that there's a bit too much "Nexx" in existing dataentry pages "Techdata: Nexx Nexx WT3020F" (and the other Nexxes smile

Edit: Cleaned up the "Nexx Nexx" mess.

I don't think we need Unsupported and WIP.

The Supported... makes more sense.... but what really would make sense is Supported+Available+Runs 15.05+WiFi and other features work. Which would leave us with a handful of devices, but that is really what people ask for anyway. For everything else there is All.

I have been/am in a low productivity phase when it comes to our Wiki work (but I was compiling Node.js 4.0 for Raspberry Pi and OpenWrt yesterday)... I think some day I will start working with the ToH, improve data where it seems most needed, and from there find what seems most important to do next.

Matching the 950 Data Entries with all the downloadable images in Trunk/15.05 would be fun.

Have a look at http://wiki.openwrt.org/playground/toh/top_note

richb might be eager to beautify this, but I need to slow you down a bit smile

First I would like to ask: Are these all ToH variations we want to show?
Are there more variations thinkable for certain users?
If we need more variations, the layout would need to be changed *again*.

Thinking about this a bit more: Who are our customers? What do our customers want to know (=which columns are needed for each customer)?

1) Plug-n-play user
  - I have a device, is it supported? -> minimal all
  - I want to buy a supported device that is readily available. From which can I chose? -> supported
  - ...
2) Advanced user / Developer
  - More hardware specifics (Platform, Target, ...)
  - ...
3) Wiki editors (adding/updating information)
  - missing wikidevi links
  - missing forum links
  - missing pictures
  - ...
4) ...?

Anything else? Special questions, that a datatable can answer?

Only 1) should be on the main page, the rest moves to ... a separate page / column / hidden section?

Comments please!

tmo26 wrote:

That's probably it.

All your other points taken.   And I gained more insights in stuff.
I discovered what MIMO is about and why the NEXX has 2 PCB antenna's

I fully agree that it is tricky to provide accurate data.

would it be an option to have an entry for Max Transmit power?
The Mediatek 7620 is max 100mW and the Atheros 3133 can do 1000mW (thats a significant difference if you want to setup a link in the field.  Lets say a group of archaeologists are hacking field data into a database at a remote location (some ancient settlement) they would prefer to use 1000mW  Where someone who is at home 10 meters away from the router and wants a very fast download Would prefer 100mW and MIMO with 40Mhz bandwidth.

Exactly the right questions.

Yes.

#1 is near and dear to my heart. I hunger to make easy for someone to hear about OpenWrt, come to www.openwrt.org, then get to the ToH, and say, "Hey, that's my router, and it's listed in the supported by the stable release. Oh, and look, there are installation instructions on the Detail Page."

#2 - same, except they say, "I am looking for a router with 4 MBytes of Flash, three antennas, two USB ports, and a partridge in a pear tree :-) It's supported by the latest Trunk, and there are installation instructions on the Detail Page."

#4 - Might be the same as #1: Plug-and-play person who is looking to purchase a new router, and wants something simple, well supported, stable software.

I have the sense that each ToH variation needs its own topnote that lists:

- Headline of what it's about: "Supported with current stable build", "Supported by current RCx", "Full Hardware Details", etc.
- A 1-3 line summary of what you'll find on the page. "This page lists all the routers that are supported by the current stable Barrier Breaker 14.07 release", "This page lists all the routers that claim support by the Chaos Calmer 15.05 release", "This page lists the major hardware details for all routers supported by OpenWrt", etc.
- Instead of emphasizing the selection criteria ("Available, 15.05, 8MB/64MB"), the summary should give a sense of why devices are collected on the page.
- It certainly would be OK to display the selection criteria (e.g. Filtered by supported current rel*~15.05)
- A "call to action" (that is, "please help us by contributing to the wiki pages...")
- A separate set of 4-6 links to other interesting ToH's (perhaps consistent for all topnotes). Could be on the right half of the page.
- Using the ToH (similar to what's there now)

I don't think we need the full ToH-Variation table on every page, but it certainly should appear on its own page "All Table of Hardware Variations" somewhere - maybe in the right links to other ToH's section on the right.

I'm going to create two variations, and update this note when they're ready for view.

Oh, and #3? - Screw 'em. They're just a bunch of anal compulsive weenies who obsess about data representations. Let 'em make their own ToH :-)

Update: I made four suggested views on the ToH. Once the template is in place, making new ones goes pretty fast. You can view them all at:

http://wiki.openwrt.org/playground/reb/1407

Comments, please.

Update: It's kinda busy (visually)... I'm going to let it cook overnight to see what I think in the AM

I think it is a step in the right direction, in the sense that we don't need the full matrix that is there now.

I think this:

This view of the Table of Hardware displays information about devices that work with the Barrier Breaker (14.07) release of OpenWrt. The Other Tables of Hardware at the right offer alternate views of the device information.

is slightly redundant... since a) the user already made the choice, b) the headline says so.

The term "Other Tables of Hardware"... could we say "ToH Filter & Columns options"?

The box to the right, would it be good to make it both show the choices and show the current choice, like:

ToH Filter & Columns options
* Everything
* Devices Supported by Barrier Breaker 14.07 Stable Release
* Devices with support for Chaos Calmer 15.05 Release Candidate
* Available devices
* Other
