Topic: Pivot overlay not working on wndr3800 (ar71xx) for svn revision 41510

The content of this topic has been archived on 2 Sep 2014. There are no obvious gaps in this topic, but there may still be some posts missing at the end.

I had been happily running openwrt, until Heartbleed hit. So, I recompiled a new image, and found that lots of stuff wasn't backwards-compatible (not so nice, but OK), but I also found that overlayfs doesn't work as documented.

#/etc/config/fstab
config global
        option anon_swap '0'
        option anon_mount '0'
        option auto_swap '1'
        option auto_mount '1'
        option check_fs '0'

config mount
        option target '/overlay'
        option fstype 'ext4'
        option enabled '1'
option device 'sdc1' # "option uuid '<block detected uuid output>'" was also tried without the quotes

After a reboot sdc1 is *not* mounted anywhere:

overlayfs:/overlay on / type overlayfs (rw,noatime,lowerdir=/,upperdir=/overlay)

Some unrelated other mounts are present:

rootfs on / type rootfs (rw)
/dev/root on /rom type squashfs (ro,relatime)
proc on /proc type proc (rw,noatime)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw,noatime)
tmpfs on /tmp type tmpfs (rw,nosuid, nodev, noatime)
/dev/mtdblock5 on /overlay type jffs2 (rw,noatime)
overlayfs:/overlay on / type overlayfs (rw,noatime,lowerdir=/,upperdir=/overlay)
tmpfs on /dev type tmpfs (rw,relatime,size=512k,mode=755)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,relatime,mode=600)
debugfs on /sys/kernel/debug type debugfs (rw,noatime)
/dev/sda1 on <details>
/dev/sdb1 on <details>

From the openwrt wiki:

If the overlay mount fails it will appear on /tmp/overlay-disabled instead of becoming the rootfs. This means that you will have no more double mounts, even on failure .

At no point did I see such a /tmp/overlay-disabled file appear.

mkdir /foo && mount /dev/sdc1 /foo succeeds.

I have seen various bugs related to this (in particular https://dev.openwrt.org/ticket/13763 and some had basically the exact same symptoms, but some where marked as "solved", even though I am running a later version.

To be clear: I expect that with the above configuration if I do e.g.

ls /

that I get the union of the fs on /dev/sdc1 and the one which is in the image with the former having precedence over the latter after a reboot. I believe this is the documented behaviour, and the observed behaviour is different, so I think it's a bug.

Have you tried the following?

1. remove /etc/.extroot-uuid on /dev/sdc1
2. new fs on /dev/sdc1

1. This file does not exist.
2. It's ext4. It doesn't get much more standard than that. Additionally, overlayfs used to work before.

option device '/dev/sdc1'

Add "option delay_root 10" to the globals section.

Tried that too, doesn't work.

I tried (like many other people) pretty much all values (ranging from 0 to 120) and it didn't work. I also tried 10,15 and 30 for example.

I had the same problem, I solved it removing 'overlay' and with option delay_root 10

#/etc/config/fstab
config global
        option anon_swap '0'
        option anon_mount '0'
        option auto_swap '1'
        option auto_mount '1'
        option check_fs '0'
        option delay_root 10

config mount
        option target '/'
        option fstype 'ext4'
        option enabled '1'
        option device 'sdc1'

What are the documented semantics of that?
Is that pivot root?

Where can I verify that this is supposed to work?

Attach a complete dmesg please.

I was unable to find a way to attach files (as an administrator, you can install a plugin for that), but the following should also work:
